Fight for a Half Holiday by Washington Navy Yard machinists
The machinists at Columbia Lodge No 4 IA M E wage a campaign to secure a half holiday with pay on Saturdays. They protested a Treasury order limiting Saturday half holidays and postponed pay, planning to meet President Roosevelt via delegation. Navy Yard officials say workers may take half days but not be paid. Pendleton argues law supports the half day without pay, with paid time only if Navy dictates otherwise.
