Big War Tax Case Heard By Court In Reargued Plea

Concluding arguments were heard on a complex tax matter seeking refunds of between seven and five million dollars from the government for the war legacy tax. The Supreme Court’s tie vote, with a vacancy, left intact the lower court ruling that repeal took effect July 1, 1901, not a year later as Treasury argued. Justice Moody’s appointment doesn’t change the division since he did not participate in cases arising under his tenure as Attorney General. In a separate incident a shooting on Delaware avenue left Richard Crawley wounded and Frank Coleman in custody, motive given as a dispute over a woman, with minor injury reported. Alleged poker gamblers Killeen, Weber, and Costa forfeited collateral after failing to appear in court. Killeen’s gambling den had been raided earlier. Also, in Tokyo, Ambassador Wright hosted a luncheon for Gen. Kuroki as he prepares to sail to Jamestown, Virginia, aboard the Aki. The body of George W. Roosevelt, American consul general in Britain, was embalmed and placed in a temporary grave as transportation to the U.S. is arranged.
