Trains Race for Life on 80 Foot Trestle Save Runaway Cars
Three B and O S W freight crewmen Charles Scherer engine man Andy Divine fireman and William Kinock head brakeman escaped a collision on an eighty foot high Mascatuck Creek trestle south of North Vernon. The two train sections split near the bridge and the rear section gained speed toward the cab. Scherer opened the throttle and the engine surged forward. They trusted the engine to clear the bridge and it did, averting disaster with their lives intact.

Robber Found With Marked Dollars From Local Family
In Suoacs Indiana a man broke into the Neidum home after church and tried to open a trunk with $200 inside. He fled but was later arrested with a revolver handcuffs a file and four marked dollars. The dollars bore the children initials helping identify him. McCarty’s wife divorced him during his penitentiary term and remarried weeks ago. He is to be sent back to Dubois county for trial.

Flood Strikes Madison Venice and Granite City Illinois
The flood caused heavy loss with estimates from twenty five to heavy, many in Madison Venice and Granite City. About three thousand refugees from the three cities were moved to St. Louis for care. Fifteen bodies were recovered from American Car Works in Madison and East St. Louis residents fought the flood for forty eight hours. B and O S W railroad delayed trains but damage was less than feared. Track and property were guarded as crews, including East St. Louis section men, worked through flooded areas.
