Two Drownings At White River In Weekend Tragedy

At White River near Maysville the boat capsized while three men William Maher Jacob Sahm and Patrick Kelly were fishing. Maher and Sahm drowned while Kelly survived by clinging to the craft until help arrived. Rescue efforts were delayed by darkness and cold water as Coroner C O Bonham learned of the incident.

Drowning Tragedy Near Yarbrough Bar Claims Two Men

Kelly and Maher, fishermen from Maysville, were swept over by current at Yarbrough bar while fishing. Maher died and Sahm’s body was recovered. Kelly endured exposure and aided in the search before returning to town. Coroner and townsfolk extended multi-boat searches with forks and improvised gear.

Indiana bureau of statistics reports 1907 corn acreage at 4,031,714 acres and total yield 150,702,420 bushels, down from 165,078,971 in 1906. Average yield 7.0 vs 41.06 bushels. Daviess leads along with Benton, Boone, Clinton, Montgomery, Rush, Shelby and Tippecanoe counties, each over 3,000,000 bushels. Ohio County totaled 163,770, the smallest.

Odd Fellows District Meeting Set for December 17

Preparations underway in this city for the Fourteenth district meeting of the Odd Fellows to be held December 17. District deputy William McCormick says arrangements are not definite. the event will include candidate initiations and reports, with drill teams from Vincennes, Bicknell and Petersburg to perform degree work. The district covers Daviess County with nine lodges and 768 members reported. it will be the first gathering here in a decade under Grand Master Elmer Hastings.

Honor Ashes and Reception Mark Abel Appreciation

A post session on Wednesday February honored Abel with a reception. The program included musical numbers, a reading by Lucian F. Corning, speeches by Mr. Hastings and Mr. Gilley, and other items. Laughter arose at Corning’s marshal reading as a dusky chorus sang. refreshments of ice cream and cake were served.

Commissioners Court Pushes Van Trees Street Improvement

The county court in session approved the petition to improve Van Trees Street from east Fifteenth Street to Tenth Street and named George Faith engineer with George Hunter and John Steen as viewers. The board also granted another petition for Second Street improvement and announced gravel road superintendents and viewers for Beckett and Murphy petitions in various townships. January 1 was set to hold the gravel road election in Madison Township. Thomas Nugent posted a $10,000 bond with Martin Nugent and others as security.

Arrest of William Killen for intoxication near church

William Killen was arrested by James Herndon Thursday morning after being found on the lawn of the First Presbyterian church nearly frozen to death. He had slept outdoors all night with no protection and suffered exposure. He works at the Seating factory and says he lost $25 in the last few days. He was fined the usual $1 plus costs in police court.

Chaney Proposes Higher Funds for Bedford Federal Building

Representative John C. Chaney introduces a bill seeking a larger federal building appropriation for Bedford. The supervising architect had said Bedford stone could not be used with existing funds, and the matter was delayed until more money is approved. Chaney aims to secure sufficient funds to proceed.

Daviess County Delegates Shrink Ahead of 1908 Convention

The Republican state committee lists county delegate counts based on votes. Daviess County drops from eighteen delegates in the last convention to seventeen for the upcoming 1908 meeting, with overall delegate and alternate seats down by about 373 nationwide under the standard apportionment. Dubois Ohio and Posey counties also gain or keep seats in the southern region.

A relic from Washington recalls a Thanksgiving day scam where an advertising man sold fake gold rings for 25 cents and chains for one dollar. Crowds gathered on Main and East Third as rings and brass chains were exchanged before the swindler vanished, with a second imitator repeating the trick.

Permits require burial secretary under new 1908 rule

After January 1 1908 all burial permits must be filled out by the secretary of the board of health or his deputies. The county council provides no deputies for the coming year so only the secretary can issue permits. If burial is needed before a permit is secured the friends must obtain it from the secretary before the undertaker can proceed. The council is hoped to provide deputies for the secretary.
