Miss Tillie Vollmer was elected Labor Day parade queen with 9 241 votes today to 1 679 for Miss Nellie Sefrit. Vollmer leads since Saturday, with a 662 vote majority, as counts show no changes for other contestants.
Julius Thompson, a colored man, is alleged to have caused trouble for Mr. and Mrs. John Rumsey due to an intimate relationship with Mrs. Rumsey. Mrs. Rumsey, now living with her mother, says she is afraid of Thompson.
A colored plumber named Thompson, accused by Mrs. Rumsey of threatening her home, allegedly forced entry despite orders to stay away. Deputy Gates found him armed at an adjoining residence. Mayor Clark fined him three dollars and costs for carrying concealed weapons. Thompson faces bond and a Tuesday court appearance.
Dr Willeford states that reports of widespread smallpox in Washington are exaggerated. He confirms about fifteen city cases with two deaths, urges vaccination, and criticizes sensational rumors spread by Vincennes and other counties while warning against negligence accusations.
William Keplinger, an employee at Patterson's livery barn in Loogootee, was killed when a cow trod on his neck while he was leading the animal from the barn. The enraged animal knocked him down and trampled him. he died from a broken neck. Keplinger was a middle aged man with a family.
Mrs Catherine Veale wife of John Veale died at her home this afternoon aged thirty one. Miss Mattie Jordan a Wheatland girl died Saturday after weeks with typhoid fever. She was a bright young woman and her death sad to her parents Mr and Mrs Alfred Jordan. Burial was at Upper Indiana cemetery near Wheatland Sunday.
Sunday morning clerk Hamlet Allen reported to the Union Association that First Baptist Church is prosperous and growing. The year showed a net gain of 36 members with 46 new admissions and 10 removals, while finances support a new church building. Sunday School under J. G. Allen leads in attendance and offerings, and the B Y P U sent seven delegates to the national convention in Atlanta.
The U B church issues a sixteen page annual directory printed and bound by Pastor Dr J T Hobson. Organized August 1894 it has grown from twenty six to one hundred forty members in eight years. Seventeen new members joined last year and church debt reductions were achieved. The coming year is seen with expected prosperity under Dr Hobson’s leadership.
Reuss visited Petersburg while J. J. Givan from Cincinnati arrived as claim agent. Over 200 shop employees out due to vaccination. R. H. Wallace appeared at Flora today. Foster Reess returned from Queen City Missouri. Trainmaster J. C. Hagerty and Enos Humphreys went to Seymour. General Manager Green returned to Cincinnati office after vacation. Carothers of B&O S W resumed duties in Maine after vacation. James Patrice, 40, died after being struck by a passenger train on the B&O S W track at Vincennes Sunday morning.
Daniel F Hatfield and Laura E Kelsey obtain a marriage license. Everett F Fisher and Ada D Esrl also receive a marriage license.
Charles G. Ellis relinquishes charge of the county farm after six years and hands over to Mason Allen the new superintendent. The farm covers 265 acres and produced 2250 dollars in grain and stools since January, with expenses around 1050 dollars. The building is aging and a new sitting room for the men is recommended by the state board of charities.
Family and friends gathered Sunday for the sixty ninth birthday of George W Morin. His son Frank and wife and child came from Cincinnati to join the celebration. Morin, a Civil War veteran born in Kentucky, is described as frail but enjoyed the day and was wished many more anniversaries.
A large gathering of friends and relatives attended a Sunday surprise birthday dinner for Thomas Daily, a prominent farmer from Bogard township.
