Harry Burling of Covington Kentucky tried to ride freight train No 87 in the shop yards late Wednesday night. He slipped when the car pulled away and a wheel crushed his left foot. A companion assisted him until trainmen arrived. He was taken to Dr Henry Herr for treatment.
Aged widow Mrs Mery Barris on the south side was approached by four strangers who tried to rob her Wednesday night. Chief of Police Geyer chased the suspects after seeing them leaving the house but could not identify them. Barris reported the men had lingered around the residence earlier and tried to gain entry.
A fragmented OCR line states Labo recently received money with mention of a marshal named Geyer and help offered to him. The text hints the speaker fears men might return and implies attempting to “weep it up” or recover funds, but details are incomplete.
The first general count in the Labor Day queen contest shows Miss Nelle Sefrit daughter of Mr and Mrs C G Berrit leading with votes over 100 more than the next candidate. Voting on the first day was exceptionally heavy with names such as Mina Belfit Laura Clark and Miss Arna Padgett appearing among participants.
Fish commissioners who have spent several days observing fishing on White River left for Terre Haute. A tight watch will continue for unlawful fishing near Washington. During their stay they with Constable Cheek burned ten seines and fined two fishermen for using them.
The infant daughter of Mir and Mrs Thomas Etringer died Wednesday at the home of her parents burial at Mt Olive Cemetery today at three o'clock.

J O Hagerty from Seymour visited today. Brakemen Clondemen and Cook resume or expect to resume duty after illness or long layoff. Detectives Bradford and Keith stationed at Vincennes to arrest tramp riders. Two men Archer and Victor fined by Mayor Roush. Baltimore and Ohio to receive 100 new locomotives with 50 for Pittsburgh area plus 75 freight engines and 10 Atlantic passenger engines. Another order for passenger engines planned.
Fairfield man Will Spencer, a Ness Eskridge salesman, faced a situation. Mrs Lucinus Hulena Knox County woman fined 25 by Squire Bascher for cursing in court. Washington residents attended Glendale Sunday school rally with Rev Samuel Reid as principal speaker. W G Gaither of Veale township praised honey from bee stands. Melville W Miller of Lafayette claimed to be slateant secretary of the interior.
A letter describes a serious accident involving Joe Walters formerly of this city now employed at R. P. Shirleys shoe factory in Enid Oklahoma. His right hand was caught in a sole molder injuring the thumb and bruising fingers. He will likely return home soon as he cannot work for several weeks.
The weekly bulletin notes timely rains aided corn though much of it remains late and small, risking frost. Clover shows improvement. early potatoes light but late ones look promising. Tomatoes two weeks late but fruiting well, tobacco and onions progressing, cucumbers yielding, peppers not mentioned. Home grown melons and watermelons move, apples fair but knotty fruit common. Pastures revived. livestock in good condition though hog cholera prevalent in some areas.
The note reports widespread illness in the locality and a fairly good malon crop expected. It records visits from Mr and Mrs James Singleton on Sunday, Henry Hill and Georgy as guests of friends, Mrs Samus Swan's improvement after illness, and Mr and Mrs Dennis jalo born Sunday visiting Mr and Mrs James Edwards. Also mentions Mr and Mrs Nelson Johnson of Washington visiting friends Friday.
The Allens and old settlers plan an all day reunion at Sugarland Grove on Thursday August 27. Invitations urge everyone to come with baskets and pass along. Prize fight results from the Corbett Jeffries bout will be shown at Welland's saloon Friday night with rounds.
Large attendance anticipated as teachers cannot afford to miss. Supt McHinory organizes a county wide event with 8 10 pm opening, evening lectures and music. Two hundred visiting pedagogues expected, day meetings free, evening sessions 25 cents each or 50 cents for three nights. Pay includes wage increase for full attendance.
Trustees urged to attend all sessions with special designation Trustess Day. Institute instructors include Sanford Bell of Mt Holyoke South Hadley, John W Carr of Anderson schools, and C W Har lan of Library Lyceum in Homestead Pa. Local ministers and teachers also on program. Officers listed: Philander McHenry county superintendent, Kate Foster secretary, Joseph A Westhafer and H C McKittrick scrolling secretaries.
About thirty young friends helped Mias Alain Brown of East Fifth Street celebrate her sixteenth birthday anniversary with late hour games and refreshments. Miss Stell O'Donald entertained friends Wednesday evening with a pleasant Flinch gathering. A moonlight picnic occurred at Vaocene s grove with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Ade Hammersly, and a group including Essie Epton, Edna Wilson, Ella Axtell, Matude Gers, Alice O Neall, C. G. Stevens, H. Gibson, Jon Larkin, H. F. Par and H. F. O Neal.
Thomas Oss, arrested Wednesday afternoon, was tried at nine this morning for attempting to lure Mayor Clark and fined $1 and costs. He paid his fine.
Clyde Goodwin, ex Washington pitcher, earned his first win for Evansville in a 5 to 1 victory over Wheeling. He allowed six hits and pitched effectively Wednesday.
