A nerveful Black man entered the Last Chance saloon near the B O S W shops and demanded a drink. He forced trainman Charles Bushnell to pay and surrender change to fund street car fare before fleeing.
A man departed town and has not been seen since. It is believed he boarded a B. and O. 5- West freight at the shops, with no trace recovered.
A sixteen year old girl Miss Maud Drown becomes the first woman mail carrier in the area. She will carry mail from Washington to rural Route No 1 for about three weeks until school starts. She is a high school sophomore and recently completed a trial trip to learn the route.
City and Hugh Rogers reach a settlement over Fourth Street with Troy road extended to the fence and a rectangular lot given to Rogers. The L shaped street will be fifty six feet wide, ten feet wider than Rogers claimed, and the corner of his property will be used for the gravel road. The deal ends the bluffing over title and street alignment.
In society notes, Willie and Susie Axtell honor Byron Kelso of Terre Haute with a gathering at Supt. W. F. Axtell’s home. Rob ert Brown plans a birthday event for his daughter Clara. Misses Artie Clara and Bessie Porter host guests in Mt. Airy with music and lawn spider web tracing. Guests are escorted to the dining room as lemon ice cake and punch are served.
A council vote failed after Bolin and others opposed the resolution. Bolin Mooney Lemmon Miles and Yenne voted against it while Hyatt Costello Smeltzer and Alexander supported it.
A special session called for Friday morning to act on closing a deal for a hospital site in a commercial area. The board approved purchase of two acres of land and the college building foundation for ten thousand dollars.
Workmen restarted gravel pumping today at Elliston and expect gravel to reach Washington by Wednesday morning. The new gravel bed opened Monday afternoon after a river fall allowed pumping, but the pumper quit for higher wages and another was unavailable until today.
Two elderly offenders Berry Thompson and Will Kelly clashed this afternoon behind the New Kentucky saloon over a long running grudge. Mayor Clark fined Thompson two dollars and costs for the incident.
John Burgett, a saloon keeper, was arrested by Deputy Sheriff McCrisaken following a grand jury indictment on keeping gambling devices.

National and American League games listed with scores from Pittsburg to Chicago. In Greencastle Indiana a tip about Dode Carrington, a suspected murderer, proves futile as authorities search. Guthrie Oklahoma reports a feud near Oleta where William Cooper and his son James are killed and Sam Barrett wounded in a well dispute.
Morton Horrall elder son of Nelson Horrall of Sycamore Street was badly hurt at the Bi and OL SW shops when his sleeve caught in a drill press pulling his left arm into the machine. Clothing torn flesh lacerated with scratches the injuries treated by Dr Henry Herr at home. The fate of more serious damage deemed almost miraculous.
Fifty detectives along the B and O S W work to end tramp riders on the railroad. Ten more arrests occurred at Seymour over the weekend with detainees sent to Brownstown jail. Officials vow to maintain a large force until the practice is halted.
The passage argues that ejecting roaming groups from along rail routes will reduce thefts robberies and murders. It contends that itinerant occupants of so called bargouts are the source of crime and that upcoming train movements and detectives will force them to abandon B and O trains, ending infestations.
T. E. Bakeman of Indianapolis president of the Indianapolis Martin interurban line announced Monday that surveys are finished for a route from Martinsville to Worthington to Linton to Vincennes to Princeton to Evansville with a branch from Vincennes to Washington. The road is planned and will be built.
Engineer Chi Markle is in Symour as Brakeman Joh Dania moves from Seymour to the city. Conductor James Cole was attacked with an axe by Leslie Galbreath of Cincinnati and is in a dangerous condition. Several crew members are listed as off duty or taking vacations amid the incident.
