A petition in Elmore township seeks ten miles of road improvement to connect with other townships. It will be filed at the May term of the County Commissioners Court on May fourth. Elmore has about eighteen miles of gravel and rock roads built last summer with good satisfaction.
Ab Brown a West End contractor sustained painful injuries after stumbling on a bridge board while carrying heavy lumber across Walnut Street and falling into Hawkins Creek. He was seen by bystanders as the accident occurred near the creek.
A man fell fifteen feet after railing collapsed into a ditch. He landed on broken bricks and glass, suffering injuries not thought serious. Nearby workers rushed to help and carried him a short distance to his home.
The Senior class staged a Class Day program at the Odon High School building with original papers and jokes about teachers and lower grades. Highlights included Salutory by Raymond O’Dell Washington's Views by Pearl Gadberry and Class Prophecy by Roland Arford as the class looks forward to Commencement on May 2.
The Loogootea Odd Fellows lodge plans an anniversary celebration with degreed work and ceremonies in the opera house. Visiting brothers from Washington, Montgomery, Shoals, Burns City and Alfordsville will attend. Degrees will be conferred on candidates by staffs from Washington and Montgomery.
Citizens Band presented a three part program at the Opera house Thursday night with minstrel, monologue, and band sections. J Alvin Padgett led the minstrel as interlocutor while Charlie Russell and John Floyd starred as end men. the program featured strong solos, a well received Mozart Choir number, and a full orchestra of ten pieces. The band concert closed the evening with popular marches and waltzes, drawing praise and a good monetary take.
Mee and Mrs. Ben Sears honor their son Hal with a gold watch and a new suit. Hal tries on coat and vest then rapid trousers exchange shocks guests. Lively scene described as a summer whirlwind with laughing responses from young ladies. Recitals, dances, and student parties announced around town.
Musical club meets at president Mrs B Hyatt home. Miss Minnie OCorna of Riley club invited to read a paper on James Whitcomb Riley. Miss Clara Weber hosts a progressive peanut party for Miss Fannie Bonham of Washington Indiana. Prizes awarded to Higa Berry Jessie Leisure Russell Gard and Don Rush. Supper served. decorations pink and white. Guests include Elsa Berry Fannie Bonham Jessie Leisure Judith Freiberger Hallie Freed John Andrey Don Rush Russell Gard Harry Mosby John Johnson Boyd Shickel Raymond Hickman.
Workmen finished repairs on the Glendale and Alfordsville line as it joined the Home Telephone central in Washington on Third Street. Residents from Glendale Hudsonville Waco High Rock and Alfordsville can now talk over the line. The project directed by L Horrall may be temporary as a new city to Alfordsville line is planned, potentially abandoning the present route.
Railroad workers report routine movements from Shoals Seymour Cincinnati Evansville Vincennes and St. Louis with plans to attend the Louisiana Purchase Exposition dedication. A minor wreck at Osgood was briefly investigated but quickly countermanded. crews chased a missing coal scoop delaying a No 43 approach.
Dr. Alexander Graham Bell advocates extending rapid mail delivery to rural areas via farmer telephone lines. He cites practical benefits, predicts lower charges, broader social and commercial links, and notes Indiana farmers lead in farm telephone development. A Charity Lodge meeting is announced for April 25.
