Nineteen hours in a near freezing refrigerator car left Ira Ramsey, 10, unharmed though shoeless, after being found inside a Swift & Co. produce car at the plant in Centerville. Police and parents recovered the boy after the car was openedTuesday morning.
OsKaloosa administrator Frank T. Nash filed suit to recover 15000 in cash and securities found wrapped around the body of Mrs Lillian Crispin widow of W S Crispin. Defendants are heirs under the will and the executors and trustees of both estates. The petition says the cash and securities were part of Crispin estate and withheld from the executor by Mrs Crispin.
Des Moines schools postpone the Iowa High School Music Association marching band contest set for Oct 17 in four Iowa cities to conserve transportation costs. Director Lorrain E Watters says the event may be rescheduled for spring with the annual spring music contests. forty four town bands had enrolled.
The Navy announced a WAVES naval reserve training school will be set up at Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls. The first session starts December 15 and about 1000 WAVES will be brought for instruction with housing and meals arranged in meetings with Navy representatives. Some instruction may be taught by college faculty.
The Senate adopted a compromise farm amendment by 86 to 4 to consider farm labor costs since 1941 when fixing price ceilings. The Barkley substitute overturned yesterday’s 48 to 43 parity calculation, removing the prior farm labor parity provision and aligning with administration farm leaders. Carl Hatch withdrew an amendment to guarantee producers prices at least equal to production costs, leaving ceilings linked to the highest prices of the year.
In district court this morning Gertrude Shettler as administratrix of William Shettler's estate filed a $25,000 negligence claim against Farmers Light and Power and Iowa Electric. A jury was drawn, stipulations read, and witness Lester Reber testified about the quarry accident near Wellman on July 27 when dynamite detonated and a contact wire was blown over a highline, allegedly causing Shettler's death. Defense counsel includes Don Barnes, S W Livingston, and Paul Harned.
Soviet reports say diversional attacks northwest of the Volga gain momentum while fierce combat around Stalingrad continues. Germans mass 25 artillery regiments and Luftwaffe sorties bombard the city. Russians slash along the Don’s east bank aiming to encircle the German force on the Stalingrad front.

Ottawa announced that the Royal Canadian Navy sank four U boats and damaged two others with several promising attacks in the St. Lawrence and Atlantic. Berlin dispatch reports Adolf Hitler declaring in a Berlin speech that Germany will take Stalingrad and press toward the Don, Ukraine, and oil in final victory. He contrasted Dieppe and Russian fronts, dismissed fears of a second front, and argued Allied leaders are “military idiots” despite censorship limits. Goebbels followed, denying palace revolution rumors.
In St. Louis the World Series opener remained scoreless after three innings as Mort Cooper pitched for the Cardinals and Red Ruffing hurls for the Yankees. Both teams held off the opposing lineup with strong defense and pitching.
Forrest Schwengel, coordinator for the pilot training courses at the junior college and airport, announced 120 applications for mental screening tests next Tuesday evening. Up to 100 may take the tests in Washington, with reservations due by Saturday morning. Tests start 6 30 p m at the high school under Kenneth Freeman, as applicants from Washington and other areas seek entry into the 1942 program. Hitler mentions winter and Nazi plans for 1942, noting the program will select those who pass this round for the November 15 cohort.
County salvage chief Earle Libe reports 27 days of September yield 14 740 pounds with 40 000 pounds collected yesterday. Frank Czok and crews mobilize across Dutch Creek, Ainsworth, Highland and Oregon townships to gather 400 000 pounds from seven districts and press toward a 500 000 pound county goal. Washington Washington sets Oct 6 all day push with 160 trucks, while Franklin Jackson and Washington townships seek 250 tons total.
Commander Ivan Norton reported the blackout light blamed on Maplecrest was actually at the Alton Brown home where Mrs. Brown was rushing to the hospital. The yard light aided preparations for her removal and was verified by the Wellman defense council and a local doctor. Norton said no county blackout will occur unless ordered and the next blackout would be for a real air raid.
The Washington county Farm Bureau will hold its annual meeting Friday evening October 9 at 8 o clock in the United Presbyterian church basement. Manford Rabenald will lead the session with officers to be elected for 1943 and policy resolutions to be adopted. Reports will be streamlined and issued in mimeograph form, and refreshments will follow the meeting around 10 pm.
The truck committee chair G. B. Mace reports eleven trucks with drivers have been pledged toward a scrap metal rally for Victory Day on October 6 near Washington. He urges more volunteers to reach a total of 150 trucks and lists Sitler's Auto Parts Hederick Motor Transport Humble Produce and others as participants.
