Kalona residents are reminded that the United Fund Drive runs October 23 to 28. The fourth annual campaign supports Red Cross Heart Research Cancer Research Salvation Army Boy Scouts Iowa Children's Home Society Kale Historical Society Arthritic Foundation Campfire Girls Cub Scouts and local welfare efforts. Battlelines Form as Burlington Debates City Government Change
Two groups in Burlington vow court action over a proposed November referendum to switch from council-manager to the commission form. Citizens for a Better Burlington argue the election would be illegal if the six year requirement isn’t met, while Citizens to Protect Their Freedoms contends state law does not block a ballot. The city council, after approving petitions with 3397 signatures, asked City Attorney Garrettson to rule within a week.
