The federal pig birth control program ends today with about six million pigs and 160000 sows bought by the government. Total spending is estimated under 35 million dollars, with final figures to be released next week. Farmers held back sows while young pigs hit the market, prompting a temporary truce to balance supply.
Mrs. Sarah Harris of Montezuma died yesterday afternoon at her home at nearly 89 after a stroke on Saturday. Her girlhood home was west of Washington. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at Montezuma. T. L. Dodds and daughter Lois and son and daughter in law Mr and Mrs Clarence Dodds will attend.
About twenty golfers from the Washington Country Club will travel to Iowa City Sunday afternoon for a return tournament with the Iowa City club. They should take Highway No. 32 east of Iowa City, the course lies 3 or 4 miles east along the road. Play starts promptly at 1 o clock. those who promised to go should arrive by then.
The funeral for George Dayton who died yesterday at the Washington county home will be at 10 30 Saturday morning at Shermans funeral home. He was about 75 and had lived at the county home for years after a lingering illness. He was a son of William Dayton of the 76 township area and had several nieces and nephews in Keota and nearby. Dr. F C Witzigman will conduct the service with interment at Keota cemetery.
John W. Applegate 68, longtime Washington mayor and real estate operator, died last night by his own hand from gas in his lodge kitchen. Family cites worry over finances and health as causes. funeral plans pending awaiting a daughter’s arrival. He had spent hours at the K P club earlier, appearing in good spirits.
John Applegate of Washington died after a lengthy pursuit of escaped convicts. He married Lina Carlock in Illinois, who died in 1906, then Maude Moothart in 1909, who survives him. He leaves six children and siblings A L Applegate and Mary Satterfield. A Presbyterian member and Knights of Pythias member, he served as mayor of Washington from 1927 for three terms, and earlier on the city council. He was known as a progressive, active, jovial figure who helped Washington prosper.
The Yellows defeated the Reds 2 6 0 at Troop F in a pitchers duel between Stan Kiesey and Art Edmondson. Kiesey held the edge as both hurlers received strong support in a fast snappy affair.
After the game last night the American Pearl team and their wives and lady friends held a skating rink party. Fifty attended and they reported a keen time.
Community fans packed the night event as top local players faced off in a well matched exhibition. The Emergency Kitchen committee reported a $25 donation from the game for the winter kitchen fund, part of ongoing relief efforts. Weather cooled attendance, but more weekend games were possible. In the Yellows vs Kieseys bout, McAvoy flied out and Dale Kiesey scored on Stan Kiesey’s two bagger after Fuhr reached on an error.
Washington high school football hosts Iowa City tonight at Case Field in a third bid to claim a win. Coach Guy Carlton has shuffled the lineup with Leno and Nowell possibly limited by practice. Ottumwa and Ottumwa losses loom in the Little Six schedule as two other games spark the night.
First arrivals of the American Legion flooded to Chicago today for what promises to be the largest Legion gathering ever held.
On Sunday evening October first at 7 30 the Methodist Sunday school will present the pageant Re building Christ s World as the rally day finale. Nearly forty cast members participate with J A Taylor directing and a rally day offering collected at the door. The episode sequence follows Love of God versus Love of Self concluding with many joining the cause.

John L. Olds died after a week long illness at his Washington area home. He was born October 8, 1860 in Louisa County and married Billa McGill on October 5, 1889. He and his wife moved to Ainsworth thirty seven years ago and lived in Ainsworth and Washington communities. He was 77 and survived by his wife, seven living children, and one deceased. He was active in the Ainsworth Methodist church and Modern Woodmen lodge. Burial was at Ainsworth after services at the M E church there.
