The French and German governments announce a permanent mutual problems committee to be chaired alternately by ministers from each country. It will include business and labor representatives and will convene in both nations. The first French premier and foreign minister visit Berlin since before the war occurred today amid a welcoming reception.
Busy slate for Coach George Freshwaters as his junior college Cardinals schedule two road and home games. Tonight they face Creston on Creston field, then host Burling ton Friday. Creston is rumored to have strong talent from Creston high school, with a likely tough matchup.
Dr Frederick Witzigman, longtime Upper Iowa conference minister, will become pastor of the Washington Methodist Church, taking duties next Sunday. He succeeds Dr A W Henke, reassigned to Hampton, Iowa, as Cedar Rapids conference adjourned. Witzigman, a Clinton native educated at Cornell College and Drew University, has led the Waterloo district and Cedar Rapids Trinity Church. His family includes a wife and four children.
Washington high school and junior college football tickets at Case field go on sale this week with nine remaining games available for three dollars. Season tickets allow nine games at 32 cents each after one ticket is taken out, transferable to nine persons for a single game. Tickets cover all home games on alternate weekends, sold at local drug and clothing stores and a North Side restaurant.
Joseph Soukup, 82, longtime Riverside resident, died after inhaling chloroform fumes at his daughter Mary Viasak's home. Born in Bohemia in 1848, he married Nettie Korpus in 1872 and lived on a farm near Richmond before moving to Riverside. He leaves eight children, twenty grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a brother and sister. Funeral set for Tuesday at Riverside Methodist Church.
Court convened this afternoon to select a jury for Harold B Nicola of Wellman charged with larceny. Trial started at two. Nicola is defended by Kehoe of Wellman with County Attorney George F Morrison for the state. Indictments allege theft of a calf near Wellman and a set of harness from a Washington farm.
Sept 28 reports from Mukden indicate officials and officers telegraphed Chiang Kai-shek and Chang Hsueh-liang that an independent government would be formed. The dispatch signals possible détente with China over the invasion as Japanese forces hold Mukden and surrounding areas.
Dr J C Pinkerton of Pittsburgh, chair of the United Presbyterian board, urged accurate understanding of church conditions in a Rye erate address. He emphasized foundational Christian powers and warned against loose thinking amid 1808 year concerns, while noting encouragement for church work and a large turnout at United Presbyterian services. Mr and Mrs Will J Marie and Miss Celestine Marie visited Davenport to spend time with Mr and Mrs George F Dempsey.
Crawfordsville Mayor says Elks are ready to send workers to repair tornado damage. Churches, hall, and government groups will host volunteers, with about 200 men expected to travel and assist cleanup and repairs. Names of workers and local firms are listed. one man refuses to work with Ode Ferguson. Water safety concerns at Berdo farm noted.
Dr. H Le Hendricks said no new infantile paralysis cases have been reported for quarantine in Mainity. Six cases total exist, three under quarantine at R F McFarlane TL Dodds and E Busby. Whooping cough tops the week with 18 cases. Allamakee county has six. Scarlet fever 12 cases, infantile paralysis eight cases spread across several counties.

Iowa Continental telephone company workers traveled to West Liberty for a district meeting of the Iowa State Telephone. A second group will meet at Mt. Pleasant. Participants include Leonard Strohm Miss Mabel Blick Mrs Edith Weidner Mrs Florence Hout and Mrs Meredith Chance. The program featured an interference demonstration and an operator’s keyboard exercise.
Mt Pleasant prepares for a three day fall festival with events each afternoon and evening. Old Settlers Day awards prize categories for age distance and residency in Henry County. An Old Fiddler contest Friday features Robert Colesiss and Barry Halden. boxing contests and Wesleyan football are planned. Farmers Day Saturday will feature Henry A Wallace, Wesleyan vs Western Illinois, and weekend contests.
Oliver Luther Blake, born July 9 18 Mediapolis, died at eight o'clock this morning after a brief illness. A former Mediapolis farmer, he lived in Washington two and a half years and sold Moorman stock foods. Survived by his widow Eva Carter, two daughters Delbert Maxwell Crawfordsville and Floyd Hottman West Branch, a son Evan died in 1924, two brothers Theodore and John Mediapolis, a sister Edward Eland Missouri, and a grandchild. Funeral arrangements set for Wednesday at 2:20 PM at the Methodist church with Dr. W W Howers of Waterloo presiding.
