Washington Police Chief Ken Bauer reminded motorists that no parking is allowed on or within one block of the city square from 1 to 5 am on Saturday mornings to keep the business district clean. He noted the ban has existed for years and several illegal tickets were issued over the weekend to violators.
Washington recorded 1.27 inches of rain before 7 am with an extended gentle shower. Only .18 inch fell Saturday evening, the rest overnight Saturday and light rain today. Skies stayed overcast Sunday and this morning with reports of up to two inches in Crawfordsville.
Tickets remain plentiful for the musical Of Thee I Sing, the opening show at Washington's Community Center from October 4 to 9. Reserved seats are on sale at Osincup Drug in Washington, despite rumors of a sell-out for the winter concert series.

Des Moines UPI says Gov. Robert D. Ray and his wife Billie prepare a two week trip to Taiwan with three other couples. Details were to be announced later. Ray was invited by Taiwan's government and they previously visited the People's Republic of China two years ago.
1st District candidate Jim Leach reissues a challenge to Ed Mezvinsky for a series of public debates in all 13 counties during the final campaign month. He notes both have accepted an October 11 debate in Iowa City and urges more debates district-wide.

Vernon E. Petzoldt, 40, of rural Jackson, Missouri, died when his loaded lumber semi overturned on Highway 78 three miles east of Wayland. The accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. as the truck, owned by Steel Haulers of Kansas City, shifted on the first S-curve, trapping him in the cab. Rescue crews freed him after about 30 minutes. Authorities from Henry and Washington counties, the Iowa Highway Patrol, and local emergency units investigated. In a related incident in the same area, 68-year-old Edward Griffith was injured in a crash involving a pickup and a semi trailer. he remained in fair condition at University Hospitals Iowa City.
Richard Jaffa, a wealthy contractor, revealed he phoned his closest friend to inform him that the man’s brother is the accused kidnapper. Police charged Jack McWilliams with kidnapping Jaffa’s wife, Sheri Linda, who was found tied to a pine tree after an FBI-led search. She survived four days without food or water and is hospitalized in satisfactory condition.
Riverside Community Building hosts the first Washington County congregate meal program at noon on Monday October 4. Donna Leyden, site manager, says seniors 60 and older and their spouses may attend five days a week for nutritious meals and social activities. Reservations by 3:30 p.m. the prior day.
Rhodesia says Washington and Pretoria must salvage Henry Kissinger’s six point plan for black majority rule after five front line African presidents partially reject it. Britain offers a constitutional conference while Smith accepts majority rule in principle. The presidents demand exclusion of the Smith regime and call for authentic representatives to lead a transition within two years.
State officials tighten pursuit of unemployment claim cheats. Lucas M. Hill of Job Service of Iowa reports 51 convictions last fiscal year and many pending cases. Work Search cards led to 89 disqualifications from 1,612 checked, with suspensions rising to a year after repeated offenses. A new computer system from Oct. 1 will aid cross state and occupation targeting.
