The Highland Community School board will meet Monday September 27 at 4 p.m. in the high school with Department of Public Instruction representatives. City water department workers will flush fire hydrants starting Tuesday September 28 in the northwest area with no work on Mondays and periods of low pressure and rusty water expected. Sunrise Singers and Boys Chorus from Lincoln Stewart and Brighton prepare rehearsals in September with directors, aiming to perform by mid October. Berdena Bagby directs both choirs.

Car thief surrenders after claiming 250 stolen cars
Walter Downey, 20, phoned police to say he would turn himself in and confessed to stealing 250 cars. He arrived minutes later driving his latest theft and was booked on three counts of auto theft and two counts of burglary. Investigators doubt the 250 figure but credit him with leading to six stolen vehicles, including one left in a no parking zone outside police headquarters.

Regional board to oversee handicapped services planned in six counties
A meeting at 7 30 p m on October 4 in the Washington County courthouse will name county representatives to a new District 10 board. Elmer Schneider urges all parents and interested residents to attend as a local advisory committee of 10 to 15 members is formed to pick five members for the district board, which will include six county reps, a service provider, two consumers and advisory committee reps from each county.
