Burlington Shooting Leaves Man Dead
A 25-year-old man, Henry Campbell, was shot and killed at an apartment building in Burlington Iowa. McKinley Witherspoon of Mobile Alabama turned himself in to police after the incident, arraigned on an open murder charge and surrendering two guns, a .32 and a .38 revolver. The victim died of multiple gunshot wounds and motive remains under investigation.

Des Moines Fire Kills Four In North Side Apartment Blaze
An early morning fire gutted a brick three story building in Des Moines killing four people including a 21 year old mother and her 2 year old son. Eight others injured, some leaping from windows during a three hour battle as firefighters fought the blaze. A husband and residents described the flames and smoke with survivors hospitalized in serious and satisfactory conditions.

Explosion in Lowell injures fifteen. no fatalities
An early morning blast in Lowell Massachusetts caused by a gas leak leveled three buildings. Fifteen people were treated at local hospitals, two admitted, their conditions not serious. The explosion shattered windows within a half mile radius and police called it a miracle no one was killed.

OPEC Boosts Oil Prices by 10 Percent for One Year
In Vienna, oil ministers agreed to raise prices by 10 percent on October 1 and freeze at that level until June 1 next year. Venezuelan minister Valentin Hernandez Acosta announced after a four day OPEC meeting. The increase lifts Saudi light crude from 10.46 to 11.51 per barrel and adds about 10 billion dollars to yearly world oil costs.
