Governor George A. Wilson, in a weekly radio address from Des Moines, criticizes class distinctions as dangerous to national defense. He warns an outside assault is unlikely under current conditions, but internal strife among classes could threaten the American way of life. Iowa may face a reckoning for communities upholding it.
A coroner inquest in Emmetsburg could not determine the cause of death of Gilchrist a local plumber whose body was found on a downtown sidewalk. Post mortem revealed multiple fractures and severe injuries to both feet with bones broken in ankles and ribs. Coroner R J Brink suggested a fall from a window or roof of the three story Waverly hotel where he had been employed.
Selective service officials urged local boards to postpone induction of mid term college students and defer senior agricultural students along with prospective engineers doctors dentists and veterinarians who have completed a year of study. The move aims to address a projected shortage of agricultural graduates needed as instructors managers and supervisors.
Cedar Falls motorists report unusual animal toughness with incidents near Cedar Falls. A motorist struck a pig two days ago causing damage to his car but no injuries. Edwin F. Hartmann of Webster City struck a cow two miles east of Cedar Falls. the cow remained unharmed while Hartmann’s car suffered about 35 dollars in damage.
The Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs endorsed a resolution urging mandatory smallpox vaccination. At Hotel Fort Des Moines the fall council session drew over 500 women, aiming to push vaccination law in the next state legislature to cut Iowa and national cases in 1940.
A mile long Pan-American day parade honored the southern neighbors with 26 floats from Shenandoah Clarinda and College Springs high schools. Jose L. Colom of Porto Rico led the procession as part of a two day Pan-American festival featuring bands horses and hundreds of participants along with Karl May’s jubilee events.
Clyde A. Sawyer of Rockwell received a $3585 verdict against B. A. Lund in a district court retrial. This was the third trial after an initial dismissal and a prior $4660 verdict. Sawyer claimed permanent knee disability from a kick at Wind sales stables during an auction in March 1940.

Washington high school band staged impressive field formations at Case Field during the homecoming halftime. In darkness the band lit the American flag with a spotlight and later formed a giant O then a star with cap flashlights for Ottumwa visitors. Audrey Hotle, Homecoming Queen, and Virginia Robertson appeared in a convertible prior to kickoff.
An announced schedule shows the state corn husking contest near Hartley in O'Brien county on October 30 with the national contest the following Monday near Tonica Illinois. District and county meets are to be held the week of October 26. J W Chandler county agent says Washington county may host a local contest if enough interest arises and asks entrants to notify the Farm Bureau by noon October 4. Royce Lyons won last year’s Keota area contest and advanced to the district contest in Louisa county.
Swedish dispatches note Alle handa from Helsinki claiming Finnish troops pushed east to the White Sea and occupied Kandelaksha on the far northern front. The report lacks official confirmation.
The rule sheet for a Thursday pie contest sets two divisions junior for under twenty and senior for twenty and older with prizes of five dollars to first place, four to second, three to third, two to fourth, and one to fifth in each division. The jury in the Iowa case against Roy Knorr of near Brighton could not agree on a verdict and was discharged by Judge Bechly. The case is continued to the next district court term. Knorr was charged with driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Rev. L. L. Miller of Normal Illinois will speak at the East Union Mennonite church Sunday evening. He will preach at the Wayland Mennonite church Sunday morning. Miller, son of the late Jacob A. Miller, was born north of Wellman and ordained to the ministry twenty one years ago.
President and Mrs. Roosevelt returned to their Hyde Park home after visiting the first lady’s boyhood residence where burial services were held for her brother G Hall Roosevelt. The couple mourn the second death in their immediate family within three weeks after traveling from Tivoli, New York.
The United States Great Britain and China have called a monetary conference at Hongkong to study new means of bolstering Chinese currency against economic moves by Japan in occupied areas of China.
President Roosevelt promised full protection for the American merchant marine and bid god-speed to 14 new Liberty cargo ships. The ships slid down the ways on Pacific Atlantic and Gulf shipyards in the largest mass launch since World War I, marking the first launches of 312 emergency Liberty ships under the Liberty Fleet Bay observance.

Funeral services for Russell Glen Leffler infant son of Mr and Mrs Daryl Leffler of Crawfordsville will be held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock in Jones chapel of the funeral home with Rev W J Stevens of the Christian Tabernacle in charge. Interment will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. Russell Gien Leffler was born August 6 1941 and died this morning about 6 30 o'clock while being taken to Washington county hospital after a sudden illness. He is survived by his parents and a brother Ira Frank.
British commander in chief of India, Wavell, traveled to Tehran to confer with Soviet Red Army leaders on joint defense measures for the region. The talks aim to coordinate strategy against potential threats in the Middle East and Iran.

G D. C. Capt director of the census reports independent Iowa retailers' August sales up 18 percent from August last year based on 865 stores. Department stores show 19 percent higher sales in August 1941 over 1940, with eight months of 1941 up 11 percent. other lines are 15 percent higher.
G Hall Roosevelt, 51, brother of Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt and uncle to the president, has died in a Washington hospital after a period as a patient released early this month. He had been ill and hospitalized in the nation's capital.
