Vatican closes St Peter's Basilica to the public

May Resume Atomic Tests Very Soon

The United States may resume atmospheric nuclear testing in the Pacific near Johnston Island as early as late September or early October. AEC and Defense plan three high altitude rocket tests and four to five atmospheric explosions. NASA and AEC will avoid conflicts with Walter Schirra Jr.'s space flight currently scheduled for October 3.

Rural-Urban Event Set for November 15

Plans for the second annual Washington County Rural-Urban smorgasbord near completion. The event will be in the armory on November 15 with Farm Bureau women cooking the meal and Dr. John Rogers as speaker. Tickets go on sale October 16.

Red Cross volunteers attend veterans hospital meeting in Iowa City

Washington County Red Cross workers joined the Veterans Administration Volunteer Service Committee meeting in Iowa City Tuesday. Attending from Washington County were Mrs. Ralph Martin chair, William Tweeten alternate VA Hospital representative, and Mrs. R. A. Baumgartner delegate. Washington County asked to provide cookies for the hospital on December 21 and 28, forty dozen each, with Red Cross offices coordinating efforts.

Linda Campbell Recounts Norway Summer Experience

Washington High School senior Linda Campbell shared her foreign exchange summer in northern Norway at the Y’s Men’s Club ladies night. She used colored slides to illustrate her trip while club president Robert Choate presided. Dick Higgins introduced her as program chair.

Mrs. J. L. McGraw Dies at 70 in Washington

Mrs. J. L. McGraw 70 of 606 West Main Street died Tuesday evening September 25 1962 at Washington County Hospital after years of illness. Harper Farmer Loses Fingers in Corn Picker

Norbert Besser of Harper lost four fingers on his right hand in a corn picker accident Tuesday morning. He was cleaning the machine when his hand became entangled and doctors amputated the fingers at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Riverside youth killed in head on crash near Iowa City

William Hugh Luckey twenty of Riverside died when his eastbound convertible collided with a shelled corn truck driven by Leonard Draker thirty one of Hills on a rural road six miles west of Iowa City. Draker survived in fair condition. Luckey was born February 20 1942 and had worked as an auto mechanic. funeral set for Thursday at 2 p.m. in Riverside.
