Duane Fik, 21, of Spirit Lake, was seriously hurt while operating a pike seining boat on Welsh Lake Northwest of Spirit Lake. He was pulled onto a large drum as it revolved, his arms broken, others shut off the motor and freed him.
In Des Moines farmers and hatcheries, aided by eight box manufacturers, discussed fears of 1942 poultry output being hurt by material shortages. The manufacturers pledged no anticipated shortage of corrugated paper boxes for shipping baby chicks and urged not to hoard boxes.
Donald Tesch and Richard Schroeder, both 16 from near Granville, are being treated at God Samaritan hospital after Schroeder's auto struck a westbound Milwaukee freight train. Schroeder suffered a fractured collar bone and both boys have head and other injuries.
About a half dozen Des Moines tobacco shops stop giving free matches with cigar and cigarette purchases as a 2 cent per 1 000 snatches excise tax takes effect October 1. Dealers weigh policy changes and cost concerns amid possible downtown industry-wide shifts.
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled that when a divorced parent dies, custody goes to the living parent. The case, appealed by Horace V. Jefffrey of Omaha and involving 11 year old Louis Wellhorn Skinner, stems from the 1933 divorce where the father Lloyd Skinner had custody. he died March 16, 1949.
District Judge James P. Gaffney assigned the September term and set 21 fraternity tax appeals to begin at 9 a m on October 2. All appeals to be disposed of before October 6 when the court’s jury will convene if possible. He noted a possibility of consolidating the 21 appeals for joint trial.
Iowa City reports that Howard University Dean Howard Thurman will speak at the University of Iowa vesper service on November 9. The series opens October 19 with Yale Divinity School emeritus Dean Charles Brown, an Iowa alumnus.

The Iowa state tax commission reorganizes its staff into two main divisions, special taxes led by E. C. Narey and property taxes led by Ben H. Hall, aiming to save about $20,000 annually. Survived by wife Clara Rowe, three children, five grandchildren, two brothers, one sister, and numerous relatives. He was born Oct 28 1862 near Kinross and was a Catholic and Three Quarter Century member.
Ten men from Washington joined about 160 attendees at a Burlington dinner welcoming Scott county Republicans into Iowa's first congressional district. The event, at Hotel Burlington, noted the 49th General Assembly redistricting moved Scott county from the second to the first district. Local attendees listed include Theodore B. Bailey, R. L. Lytle, A. S. Baldrige, R. H. McCleery, Dr. A. W. Clow, Donald C. Bell, C. R. McCutchen, Lester Orr, C. C. Wilson, and John Rittenhouse.
The Chamber of Commerce sponsors a pie baking contest in Washington on Thursday October 2 with 30 dollars in cash prizes. Divisions include junior for twenty and under and senior for over twenty. each awards 15 dollars. Winners enter a sweepstakes with a 5 dollar prize to help attend the district contest. Pies become property of the chamber and will be auctioned after the contest. Brown and Bruty auctioneers will handle sales with two crust pies using lard shortening.
The Washington county 4-H girls clubs organized a 1942 program with a Home Efficiency theme emphasizing nutrition and conservation for national defense. Esther Everett and J Harrion Donald led the meeting, noting due dates for long time record books and listing attending club leaders officers and committee members.
DES MOINES Sept 25 Iowans consumed 2 008 957 gallons of state sold liquor and 151 746 gallons of wine in 1940 41 fiscal year paying 14 434 801 for it. Net profit reached 3 216 218 with 406 316 from permits and discounts. Per capita consumption exceeded a gallon. Proceeds plus profits were turned over to the state general fund.
Secretary Morgenthau announced at a press conference that treasury experts are drafting a bill to cap corporate profits at six percent for the duration of the emergency. He had proposed the limit during testimony before the House Banking and Currency Committee on price control legislation.
Bishop Warren Akin Candler of the Southern Methodist Episcopal church died at his Atlanta home at 7 20 a m He was 84 and had long served as chancellor of Emory University in Atlanta His deteriorating health over three years was attributed to old age

Local voters yesterday defeated a proposed bond issue to fund an outdoor swimming pool by 495 no to 490 yes. turnout was low with several hundred residents voting under Mayor R J Lytle led petition. Ward results show uneven support across all wards.
G Hall Roosevelt, 41, brother of Mrs. Franklin D Roosevelt, died at Walter Reed hospital after several days of illness. The White House said he died at five this morning and Mrs. Roosevelt was present, marking the second Roosevelt family death in a month following the president’s mother’s passing.
Senator Kenneth McKellar of Tennessee introduced a bill to repeal the Neutrality Act calling it a mistake. He argued the law has done no good and cluttered a bad situation and conflicts with freedom of the seas policy pursued for over a century and during two wars.
