An all day sale at Sully proceeds to aid Sept. 7 tornado victims across a mile wide Jasper county area. Livestock grain machinery and other items were auctioned while band concerts and shows ran through the afternoon and evening.

Erick Martin of Versailles Missouri and his wife and infant son escaped injury when their truck loaded with posts overturned east of Fort Dodge and caught fire. Martin pulled his family from the cab as flames burst through the floorboards and could not save his wife's purse containing twenty dollars as the blaze spread.

Jane Belk nap former Hamilton county public hospital superintendent pleads innocent to forgery and embezzlement charges. State examiners found a $2025.97 funds shortage. Trustees asked for her resignation and later chose Florence Weaver of Pekin Illinois as superintendent.
A mass of 400 to 500 students gathered for a school picture at Cornell College in Mount Vernon when the bleachers collapsed. About a dozen students sustained minor bruises, but the fall was limited to about six feet, reducing serious injuries.
DES MOINES The state confirms a two per cent coffin tax after EB. F. Kistner of Waterloo Funeral Home paid 3086 in sales tax and sought a permit following a multi court battle. Kistner argued his transactions were services not retail goods. The supreme court denied his challenge.

Kenneth Fuller Eleanor Gruell and Catherine Netland were fined 25 dollars each by Justice Paul E. McCarville for failing to report a fatal accident. The crash killed 24 year old Martin L. Finney on September 19. the three were passengers in Finney's car and escaped injury.
Berlin reports German troops are in the suburbs after breaking the defense ring and tightening a noose around Leningrad. The spokesman warned of catastrophic conditions as a huge population is cut off with no supplies.
The Washington County Defense Council with E. D. Morrison Jr as chairman received appointments from Governor George A. Wilson. Appointees include Dr E. D. Funeral services for Margaret Reaney will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock in the Letts Methodist church. Burial follows in the family lot at Letts cemetery. Miss Reaney, sister of Robert Reaney and Mrs Lee Derby, died this morning at 5 30.

Robert Stanley Miller eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Herman Miller died suddenly at his Ottumwa home from an acute respiratory condition according to a physician the child was dying on arrival with no evidence of foul play or other factors reported.

A wheel from Emmet Hayes delivery truck struck J. W. Bud Fields’s Dodge sedan this morning at about 10 30 as Hayes and Rev. Lester Schooley’s car traveled west about ten thirty west of Number 11 School house. Fields could not dodge the wheel. left tire and fender damaged.

Funeral plans await word from her husband stationed in Wyoming. services likely tomorrow at Brighton Methodist Church with burial in Hillcrest. Survived by husband and mother Mrs Henry Spielman, Fairfield, plus three brothers Ray Dale and Floyd, sister Mrs Ernest Peasley. infant sister Hazel died earlier.

Marion George reports tax collections near last year’s total with five days left to pay the second half without penalty. September expected receipts total 379,216.76 with about 175,000 still due.
Funeral services for Mrs. John Ryan were held at nine oclock yesterday morning at St James Catholic church. Rev H J Corcoran conducted the service with interment in Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers included Ernest Dean Kalona Dr J A Marie Leo Wolf S J Boyd Leo and Leonard Marie.
