Samuel Lewis Shank ex mayor and famed Indiana auctioneer died today at 7:49 a.m. ten minutes after his wife urged him to rest from a week long illness. Born Feb 23 1872 he twice served as mayor and was known for his thunderous voice on auctions and political platforms.
Wellman Masons held an elaborate county Masonite picnic with about 200 from Washington and near 800 at the Oakwood pavilion for the evening dance. The day included a town-wide welcome, a Wellman High School band performance, talks by Eardley Bell and David J. Tripp, and a softball contest captained by McIntosh and Lupton.
Floodwaters from the Panuco river left 7 000 to 10 000 homeless across Mexico. 1 200 houses destroyed with property damage estimated at two to three million dollars. Acambaro worst hit with 22 soldiers reported dead aiding flood victims. Relief funds organized by chambers of commerce and charities.
Congressman F. D. Letts of Davenport spoke at the Bethel fall festival about improving the farm situation nationwide. He urged expanding land markets, industrializing Iowa towns, and lowering freight costs by using waterways while noting broader farm legislation will continue. Brighton Iowa September 28 1927 the Brighton Mutual Telephone Co held its annual meeting electing Grant Horton president Otto Fritz vice president R W Hin ton secretary treasurer and K M Elmore manager. New directors named H W Helmick Anson Brinton Wm Hesseltine and T L Lamansky. A third fire in a week damaged the summer kitchen on the Wikoff farm near town. Raymond Wikoff and family saved the house with nearby water, while the burned area suffered heavy damage.
Federal Judge James H. Wilkerson issued an order impounding the Tunney Dempsey fight films seized in Chicago while being loaded onto airplanes. Henry Sonenshine, president of Goodart Film, faces a conspiracy to violate the interstate commerce act charge and was free on bond for examination. The court planned to hear arguments on returning the films with a 4 p m deadline risking a $100000 loss to Sonenshine if possession is not regained.
John Grecian of Kalona was sentenced by Judge Charles A. Dewey to six months in the Washington county jail and a $500 fine plus court costs including a $200 attorney fee for maintaining a liquor nuisance at his Kalona home. A charge of illegal sale of intoxicants remains continued to the next term. The judge noted the need for jail time under state law and warned against violations of liquor laws.
Rodney Arnold Marion Thompson and Roy Schiebel returned from a few days sightseeing trip through Minnesota Wisconsin Michigan and into Canada They met Paul Youne in Minnesota and he traveled home with them yesterday for a short visit.
Among those from out of town who were shopping and attending business matters in Washington yesterday were C. H. Fragey of Brighton, Mrs. R. C. Ferguson of West Chester, Mrs. D. Poferty of Brighton and Mrs. H. J. Davis of Crawfordsville.
Late this afternoon the Journal received news of the death of Chriest L. Ower on Thursday night in a sudden event. People in the community recall his wife as Mrs. Sadie Mc Junkin. No definite word has been received concerning the cause of death.
Des Moines reports Governor Hammill will not dispatch troops to Appanoose County where a strike mob of 256 miners and families was dispersed by tear gas. Sheriff Gaughenbaugh says reinforcements will help maintain control as officials cite broken union agreements and ongoing depredations at Garfield mine and surrounding pits.
Funeral services for Walter Peterson will be held Sunday afternoon at three o'clock at the Methodist Church. The service will be conducted by Dr. W. W. Bowers, as announced.
The Witting harness shop relocated this week from Fast Washington street after two years to a room in the Knapp building on the square’s north side, formerly Bluebird cafe. The move offers a better location and room to expand the business.
Carson Packer, a Crawfordsville junior college student, remains near unconscious at the county hospital after a Wednesday evening car crash. Doctors report no skull fracture or neck injury on X ray and express cautious optimism for recovery despite a prolonged unconscious period from brain concussion.
A Washington company of horse shoe pitchers competed in the Winfield homecoming tournament. They captured most prizes with Andy Blattner first for 6 dollars, Sam Warren third for 3 dollars, Griff Humphrey fourth for 2 dollars, and August Zellowsky fifth for 1 dollar.
Jacob Gayer longtime Burlington resident and former Washington county settler died aged 79. Born in Germany in 1842, he lived in Burlington from the 1900s and earlier in Washington county as noted in a Kansas paper. Funeral arrangements pending.
Eskimos are described as enormous eaters with a single family finishing four seals in four sittings. Hunters reportedly consume large amounts of whale blubber and raw meat during regular activities at their camps.
Wyman won 12 to 9 over Crawfordsville high in a rough field game on the local diamond. The teams planned a return game in Hillsboro while residents await word on Carson Packer after an automobile accident. The Care-Away Circle ladies met at Mrs. Moorhead’s country home for a club history and lunch hosted by Mrs. Minnie Sprague and Mrs. Hazel Moorhead, with Rose Moorhead leading.
Dempsey and Tunney met in the center as referee Barry explains his instructions to the principals and seconds. He notes Tunney’s knockdown in the seventh round and Dempsey’s and Tunney’s compliance with corner rules and the timing of the count.
