New York UPI reports Mary Roberts Rinehart, 82, died in her Park Avenue apartment after a prolific career spanning 40 years and more than 10 million copies sold. She wrote mysteries and medical-themed works, married to doctor Stanley M. Rinehart, and interviewed European royals as a correspondent. She leaves three sons and six grandchildren. her husband died in 1932.

The National Industrial Conference Board reports the cost of living remained at 107.4 percent of the 1953 base for August and was 2.2 percent above a year earlier. Food prices fell 0.6 percent, offset by rises of 0.5 percent in transportation and sundries and 0.1 percent in housing. Apparel was unchanged from July. The year over year in all major components shows food costs up 3.6 percent.
