The Knights of Pythias open the fall season with a meeting Monday at 7 30 pm in the lodge hall. Ten new candidates will seek membership and initiation as pages. Plans for fall activities and a luncheon after the session are planned.
Twenty six members of the local Christian church attended the Southeast Iowa district convention at the First Christian church in Burlington Thursday. Rev Tom C Polk, pastor of the local church, was re elected district secretary with Dr Loren Lair as convention director. Main speakers included Sr Virgil Sly and Dr John McCaw.
New York report says Margaret Williams Pierce a 63 year old hospital receptionist left 150000 dollars to Memorial Center for Cancer and Allied Diseases to fund cancer research after receiving charity treatment for her death caused by cancer last May. Officials said they had provided thousands of dollars of treatment for only 35 dollars last year due to her presumed poverty.
The YMCA and YWCA sponsor monthly folk games for youths and young adults. The opening event is 8 p.m. Friday, September 29, emceed by Art Brown, with refreshments after the games. open to all in the territory, not just Washington residents.
Des Moines forecast shows fair weather this afternoon tonight and Sunday with cooler night and light frost in the northeast. Highs range from 68 to 75 today and 65 to 70 Sunday, lows from 32 to 46. Winds shift from northeast to southeast then outlook remains fair with a warming trend through Monday and Tuesday.
The Senate endured a 24 hour filibuster over President Truman’s veto override on the communist curbing bill. Sen. Engham Langer collapsed after five hours of talk, was hospitalized, and talks continued with Sen. Douglas and Sen. Murray stepping in as the effort to force a vote appeared doomed. Senate leaders urged consideration of a quit deadline set for November 27.
Gene Gorham president of the Washington Booster club announced members will meet every Wednesday night at the YMCA until further notice. Plans include showing a football film from the State University of Town next Wednesday. All members urged to attend as several important business matters will be discussed.
Four young Irish students crossed the Atlantic in a 25 foot schooner to reach New York Harbor. They completed the Bermuda to New York leg in 12 days and head to Spring Green Wisconsin for postgraduate study with architect Frank Lloyd Wright. After finishing, they plan to resume their round the world voyage in the schooner Ituna.
A B 50 Superfortress with sixteen aboard disappeared on a training flight from Goose Bay Labrador en route to Davis Monthan Arizona. Rescue services launched searches from Lowry Air Force Base and Selfridge with 40 B 29s assigned, while Lt. Col. Gunnison directs the interior search.
W H Trull notes his mother kept a sewing machine bought in 1897 for 25 dollars. The machine has never needed repairs, underscoring its durability and long service in the family.
"Born Yesterday" opened at the community playhouse before a capacity crowd with no incident. Director Kendrick Wilson replaced a Creighton University instructor who withdrew after a Legion blast at the play last week. The show runs a week. Legion Commander Joe Vinardi criticized the author Garson Kanin for being listed in Red Channels, but no action was taken.
Mount Asama in west central Japan erupted without warning during a holiday, sending a shower of hot rocks and ash into nearby villages. A party of 40 engineering students near the summit included casualties with one dead, six injured, five missing, and many others evacuated or at risk as debris toppled houses and damaged power lines.
Gra-Y officers for the first semester were elected at Prairie Flower, Lincoln and Stewart schools. Prairie Flower names Lee Long president, Gary Fortney vice-president, and Lee Christner secretary-treasurer. Lincoln group lists Larry Knight president, Don Embree vice-president, Tom Schulty secretary-treasurer. Stewart school selects Don Nickerson president, Robert Wallace vice-president, Phil Brown secretary-treasurer.
Between 650 and 700 teachers from Washington Louisa and Jefferson counties will attend a multi county institute at Washington High School on Wednesday September 27. Registration starts 8 a m and sessions run to 3 45 p m with a noon lunch. Separate programs cover elementary high school and junior college teachers. Schools in the three counties will close for the day.
United Press reports the Seoul front near the city’s northwest and west boundaries shows heavy fighting as Marines and South Koreans push to encircle Seoul from the south and west. British and American forces suffer casualties while Allied air power and artillery pound enemy positions.
The Air Force set multiple aviation firsts including three B-45 four engine jet bombers landing at Hickam Field after a routine mission. Col. David C. Schilling completed a non stop trans Atlantic jet hop in 10 hours 11 minutes from England to Me. Maj. George B. Thabault piloted a B-45 across the United States in 4 hours 6 minutes from March Field to Langley Air Force Base.
Five persons were injured in a head-on collision on Highway 261 about five miles north of Iowa City. Two seriously hurt. four occupants were University of Iowa students. Drivers Hal De Cour cey 18 St Louis MO Clayton Yoder 19 Iowa City and Tom O Meara 16 De Witt were involved. all five hospitalized.
John M. Pratt 87 of 320 West Second Street died at his home Saturday after eight years of declining health and a six month illness. Funeral services at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. C R Reed and Rev. Walter Smith. burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Born July 11 1863 south of Ainsworth to O P Pratt and Harriet Traphagan. lifelong farmer and county resident. He married Rebecca Ann Moore in Washington on December 24 1884. Survived by daughter Mrs Grace Sigafoose of Washington. wife predeceased him May 10 1948. He was member of KP lodge and Methodist church. last of 11 children.
Graveside services for the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Choate were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Elm Grove cemetery. Dr. W. J. Grossheim conducted the service. Sherman’s funeral home arranged the funeral.
District Judge Milton J. Glenn sentenced Duk Sung Choi a 36 year old Korean student at the University of Dubuque to 50 years in Fort Madison for the razor slaying of Chun Keun Oh 24 of Seoul Oh was killed in his dorm room after a dispute over alleged forgery and a check for 6 30 Choi pled guilty to second degree murder after initially facing a first degree murder charge He claimed innocence before the sentence was read and authorities said he signed a statement admitting the slaying
Secretary of the Navy Francis P Matthews praises former Defense Secretary Louis Johnson as a great American with an unprecedented contribution to national security. He credits Johnson with unifying U S armed forces, enabling the Korean War UN forces buildup and a major logistical achievement through deliberate, persistent effort.
Sutton's Island Maine hosts Harvard University faculty as guests thanks to a 1942 bequest from William L. Kendall class of 1876. Kendall willed his house and land for rest recreation and study with $25 000 for upkeep. The estate accommodates five persons for two week stays.
