Local residents may use the usual routes to the Farm Progress Show at Crawford Jones and Stewart farms northwest of Washington. No one way traffic plan is in effect. Signs and officers will direct visitors to parking. one access road will be for show staff only. Roads will close to extra traffic this weekend due to crowding.
The Washington County Porkettes sponsor an Iowa Chop dinner to open October Pork Month. The event targets pork producers and spouses with guests, scheduled October 4 at 7 p.m. in the K C Hall Washington. Tickets cost 20 dollars for four, or 10 dollars per couple. reservations and payments are due by September 30 to Mrs. Robert Bonar Route 2 Washington 52353.
Principal Burge Hammond announced the standard policy allowing students to be excused to attend the Farm Progress Show with a parental note and make up work in advance. Some families asked about work during the event, noting 4-H and FFA students will be present for several days. Others may attend on Wednesday September 28 when there is no school.
William Stewart, 35, of Monroe, died at the Iowa Southern Utilities electrical generation station when a 22 foot bundle of steel grating fell while he installed it inside a two story structure. Earlier, three workers were critically injured and a colleague died of a heart attack prompting a temporary walkout. workers demanded a permanent ambulance at the site and returned after nine days without the ambulance.
Iowa Farm Bureau President Dean Kleckner said the new farm bill could aggravate the current low spirits price situation for farmers. He urged better marketing of products and called for an immediate meeting with President Carter and top farm officials to discuss emergency programs to combat slumping grain prices.
Ed Campbell announced President Jimmy Carter will be the principal speaker at the Iowa Democratic party Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner. The event is Friday October 21 at Veteran's Memorial Auditorium Des Moines with tickets 36 dollars per person or 50 dollars per couple. More details to come.
UPI reports August CPI up 0.3 percent, the smallest monthly increase since November 1976. Food costs rose modestly, mortgage rates fell, service prices slowed, and overall inflation averaged about 5 percent over three months. Real earnings slipped as consumer buying power weakened.
A Senate subcommittee invites former CIA biochemist Sidney Gottlieb, linked to the MKULTRA program, to testify with immunity from prosecution. Kennedy notes MKULTRA spanned the 1950s to early 1970s, involving drugs, hypnosis, and other experiments on unwitting subjects, with records later questioned as possibly doctored.

The Iowa Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Mount Pleasant man Michael W. Millspaugh who was convicted of first degree murder in the 1976 killing of J. Raymond Traut at a service station. The court ruled the jury lacked options for second degree murder or manslaughter and overturned the verdict, sending Millspaugh to be retried.
Preparations for the 1977 Farm Progress Show are underway on the Crawford Stewart and Jones farms north of Washington. The event, sponsored by Wallaces Farmer, features 434 exhibits on an 80 acre field, field demonstrations, extensive crop trials including 111 herbicide treatments, tiling and drainage demos, and a home show for the ladies. Food tents, no admission, and a track for recreational vehicles add to the program.
Indicted Scott County Sheriff Ken Paulsen was reimbursed 31 234 for mileage in 1975 and 1976 despite a county car. Deputy auditor Pat Walton said raids uncovered checks totaling 16 101 in 1975 and 15 133 in 1976, while seven deputies face charges. Indictments include 14 counts of obtaining money under false pretenses and conspiracy. Defense teams plan to challenge the grand jury’s indictments.
