Diphtheria Death Shocks Sioux City Family

A 12 year old Sioux City girl died of diphtheria while five of her siblings were hospitalized. Health officials quarantined the family and began house to house checks in a two block area to prevent further cases.

Henry County Plans Polio Immunization Next Spring

Henry County doctors propose county wide polio immunization with Sabin Type I in October and Type II in November. Centers will be set up in towns and a January 1963 plan pending Surgeon General guidance. Washington County also considers a spring mass immunization.

Sales Tax Receipts Rise in Washington Area

The quarterly report shows Washington state sales tax receipts for the quarter ending June 30 1962 rose from 1961. State totals reach 67400.91 with county 107604.42 while Wellman declined to 10497.10. Nearby cities Mt Pleasant Fairfield Keota and Columbus Junction all posted increases.

Students praise Washington new junior high building

Seventh and eighth graders at the Washington Community School District share positive views on the new junior high. NFO Rallies For The Big Push In Livestock Prices

The National Farmers Organization mobilized 16 states for a three week push to raise cattle hog and sheep prices. Staley praised a multiday series of county rallies and 25 meetings with dairy farmers to discuss including milk in the hold. Hog prices rose at 12 major markets and Chicago hit the year’s high of $20 per hundred pounds, as USDA notes hog and cattle shipments lag behind 1961.

Brown Finance Sets 1048 Scratch Game Record

In the Five Towners League at Melody Lanes on Thursday night Brown Finance posted a 1048 scratch game, with 35 marks in the first five frames and 31 strikes. Top scorers included Don Boyer 254 Dallas Chamberlin 230 and John Lee 205, followed by Dr G J Nemmers 182 and Don Mitchell 177. The Sin clair team faced the hot Brown Finance squad.

Nine of ten survive UN plane shot down in Katanga

Rescue teams reached the wreckage near Kabonga in Katanga and confirmed nine of the ten Swedish crew members survived a C47 Dakota crash. The UN said the aircraft was shot down with one dead and others injured or unhurt. Flight engineer Wartt Solve stad was identified as the dead man. UN helicopters and Saab jets secured the area as authorities avoided assigning blame.

Y's Men Plan Annual Pinochle Bridge Marathons

Washington Y's Men's club prepares for its annual contract bridge and pinochle marathons starting mid October. Past participants will be invited again, newcomers urged to register, with Leon Hillman leading the bridge committee and Herb Campbell heading the pinochle group. Washington YMCA committees met at Lake Darling Youth Center Thursday evening for their annual retreat to discuss plans for the coming year. Robert Reed led the program after supper prepared by the men while Attorney John C. In North English the English Valleys School district rejects a $560000 high school bond. Voters 1076 yes 737 no miss the 60 percent required, an eighth defeat since 1956. District serves North English South English Webster Kinross and nearby areas.
