The Des Moines Junior League convalescent home and Dr O E Hoffman state director of dental hygiene will lead the northeastern Iowa nursing institute in Waterloo with principal speakers announced.
Fort Dodge council approves installation of municipally owned water softeners in homes. Rental fee set at 50 cents per month with a 50 cent charge for re charging.
Ottumwa police say Roy Keasling, 58, was shot in the head by a .22 rifle while outside his home two miles west of town. They believe the wound was accidental and caused by hunters in an area known for hunting activity.
Bishop J. Ralph Magee presiding officer of the Upper-Iowa Methodist conference played 12 holes at the local golf course after arriving in Clinton. He completed nine holes in 54 strokes and quipped it was not bad for a Methodist bishop.
Des Moines Iowa liquor commissioner Dick R Lane indicated higher prices for Scotch whiskey are forthcoming due to wartime disruption. Distributors have withdrawn price quotations and while purchases may continue at old prices briefly, increases are expected. About 60,000 cases of Scotch were lost when the Athenia was torpedoed.
Adair P I Kelloway a 55 year old stock buyer and Adair city council member was killed when a westbound Rock Island freight ran over him after the train stood in the yards and pulled out his body found on the track. It was believed the death resulted from an accident.
Six youths shot and killed Premier Armand Calinescu as he rode to the royal palace. Seven conspirators, including radio station attackers, were arrested. King Carol met with the cabinet and officials said Romania remains neutral and calm after the attack. Two assassins died by self-inflicted shots when cornered in a store.
A United Press report says a radio dispatch from Bucharest claimed Romania's premier Calinescu was assassinated and a cut in outside communication hinted at major southeastern Europe developments. The piece links possible Nazi Soviet actions if the regime falls and notes Iron Guard plots against Bucharest officials and public buildings.
Albert Simpson was elected board member of the sixth district at a state carpenters union convention in Waterloo. He and Mrs. Simpson attended. The next convention will be in Ottumwa for the local fortieth anniversary with Simpson supervising one sixth of Iowa’s territory.
A train started moving as Kellaway tried to cross between two freight cars. He lost balance and fell under the wheels.
The Iowa unemployment compensation commission upheld in part and denied in part Hawkeye Pearl Button Co workers in Muscatine. It ruled the April 27 stoppage was not a labor dispute and that eligible employees may receive benefits from April 27 to June 18. It also found the June 19 stoppage and subsequent days were due to a labor dispute.

German artillery pounds French positions from Moselle to Rhine amid fears of renewed French drive. Premier Deladier declares French soldiers fight to end a system of threats, after a trip to the front. Goebbels denies plans to invade Belgium or the Netherlands in the wake of the European war.
A barn, double corn crib, and hog house burned at the Raymond Rains farm five and a half miles northwest of town. Spontaneous combustion started the blaze, with about forty loads of bean hay in the mow and خس other grains lost. One horse severely burned. two calves and a horse missing. harness and tools destroyed. the Farmers Mutual fire truck aided in saving the house.
In Des Moines ten permanent and sixteen temporary workers in the state public safety department were dismissed in a sweeping house cleaning. The action mainly affected holdover Democratic workers, with some appointees of Secretary of State Earl G. Miller also removed. Karl Fischer, commissioner of public safety, heads the department.
Mr. Dunlap praised Harvey Meek and the Farmers Mutual fire truck for guiding neighbors in fire fighting. He noted insurance covered personal property and buildings, and said the structure would have burned without the fire trucks and community service made possible by Farmers Mutual Insurance.

W R C district convention prompts display of flags by business houses. FE Sehmitt of the Chamber of Commerce asked that all storefronts fly flags in front of their premises tomorrow for the event.
The Catholic Diocese of Davenport plans a fundraising campaign to support diocesan institutions including St Ambrose College. A special appeal will target non Catholics in Davenport. Parishes begin solicitation in November. Father Cullinan named Diocesan Director with offices at 414 Brady Street. Father Lawler named campaign treasurer.
In a joint address to Congress Roosevelt calls for a cash and carry embargo system, power to set war zones, travel bans on belligerent ships, cash purchases, and ships of buyers. He stresses unity, nonpartisanship, and immediate congress adjournment once enacted. The speech was broadcast globally from the packed Capitol chamber.
Late yesterday the jury in the Goble estate case awarded Lizzie Farrel 465 dollars on her claim of 1420. The verdict came after a 10 30 am start and a filing of the judgment shortly before 5 pm in the September term.
Stassen calls on 12 Midwestern governors to join a common front at a farm conference in St Paul to share ideas for increasing farmers income and buying power amid a new war menace. Seven states confirmed attendance with five others sending representatives and 12 agricultural experts invited.
The Hi Y Club of Washington High held its first regular meeting of the year at the Y yesterday evening. A 6:39 dinner preceded the initiation of about 25 new members with Jack Mace presiding. After the ceremony members enjoyed ping-pong and swimming. The next meeting is planned for two weeks from Wednesday.
A new concrete walk was finished in front of the Iowa Southern Utilities office on East Washington Street. Ralph Mintek supervised the project this afternoon. Forenoon witnesses included W. Kaster Dorothy Denison Fred Downing C. W. McLaughlin Dr. C. A. Volee Jesse Busby and Vig Blattner.
