Festival Parade Set to Shine at Washington Festival
The annual Washington fall festival will open Thursday September 29 with a larger parade and more exhibits. Entries from Washington county and beyond compete for prizes in floats decorated cars and comic features while a full two days of bands, horse shows, hog and poultry displays and a big cattle show promise nonstop entertainment. Local officials urge entrants to report by September 27 to streamline Thursday’s procession and the parade moves at 10 o'clock.

The Monahan post band from Sioux City Iowa won the national championship of the American Legion for the second year in a row. Canadian mission burns with heavy loss in Saskatchewan
A Roman Catholic mission at Lae la Plonge in northern Saskatchewan burned Monday night with many dead. Nineteen children and a nun Sister Lea died. many others were left destitute. Word reached Big River, 100 miles south, via a mission launch. Mr and Mrs J A McKinstry were briefly in the area en route to Ratherville.

High School Event Highlights Yell Leaders Contest
Carson, Cloyd Garret and Merritt McDaniel led the program. Four high school class representatives competed in a yell leaders contest won by Carlton Lytle of the junior class. Devs drew strong audience response as two fast march numbers closed the program by the band.
Mrs. Ellen Prizer of Brighton Dies After Illness
Mrs Ellen Prizer died at 1 40 this morning in an Iowa City hospital after a prolonged illness. She had undergone an August operation and spent time with her daughter at Columbus Junction before returning. Survived by sons Oliver Theodore Lieyd Moyle Keith and daughter Mrs Lee Hunto n, burial slated for Brighton. She was born Ellen Swisher and belonged to the Christian church P B O society Rebekah lodge and Eastern Star.
