Rainfall Totals and Cloudy Skies Persist in Washington

Washington recorded three-tenths of an inch of rain on Thursday per the official weather observer. Overcast skies dominated the day with a brief morning sun and persistent cool temperatures throughout.

Mount Pleasant trio charged in theft case tied to fatal blast

Silas Wellington Jr and two others face charges of receiving and concealing three International Harvester tractors. Wellington is free on recognizance with a preliminary hearing set later this month. The case follows a dynamite blast that killed Walter Wellington, brother of Silas, behind Mount Pleasant Bank and Trust Co. FBI probe of undisclosed nature noted.

Iowans receive 11.3 million in August jobless benefits

Iowa unemployment payments totaled 11,288,791 for August, with six programs distributing funds. Regular unemployment insurance amounted to 6,944,948, down 4.3 percent from July, yet up 328.9 percent from August 1974. The total shows a $325,409 decline from July levels.

Bank hostage crisis in Faverges ends with partial ransom

In Faverges France a gunman seized five bank hostages and released three women after a ransom of 1.45 million dollars was paid. He kept two male captives and demanded their release with plans to flee in a getaway car. Authorities opted to deliver the money as the kidnapper threatened to execute captives one by one.

Gravel Truck Pass Crashes On County Road 626

Two truck drivers escaped injury when their vehicles collided on county road 626 five miles north of Washington at 8 15 a m. Roy Dale Malichky driven by a gravel truck passed Terry James Walker in a feed truck. The auger struck, the feed truck spun, the gravel truck veered into a ditch. Damages were 4800 and 500 dollars. Malichky charged with passing at an intersection.

Hearst Arrest Ends Prolonged FBI Manhunt in San Francisco

The FBI said fingerprints in a Pennsylvania farmhouse and careful follow up led to the arrest of Patricia Hearst and four SLA members in San Francisco. Hearst and the Harrises were taken to a county jail for security before court appearances and bail was set at 1 050 000 dollars.

Civil case backlog grows as criminal filings rise in Iowa courts

Iowa court data show 46 percent of 32 244 regular civil cases were over one year old at year’s start, with 14 682 pending. Civil filings dropped 4.8 percent while criminal filings rose 27.9 percent. At year start 1 737 of 8 358 regular criminal cases were over a year old.

Iowa high tribunal restarts division panel hearings

The nine member high tribunal reinstitutes a 1929 43 practice with rotating panels of chief justice and four associate justices. Most cases are decided by division and justices hear oral arguments two days a month except the chief. Controversial cases may be handled differently. Continued on Page 10.

Muscatine chief denies drug delivery and affair claims

Wayne McDaniel the suspended Muscatine police chief testified he did not deliver drugs or have sexual relations with Barbara Edington, saying he checked a shed after two anonymous calls and found no package. Edington testified McDaniel supplied marijuana and drugs about every two weeks for a year and became intimate on several occasions. A 19 year old, Jerry Brown, was later found at the shed with pills and marijuana.

Des Moines Hears Protests Over Statewide Property Valuations

Iowa Revenue Director Gerald D. Bair launches hearings starting Monday on protests by county and city officials to the equalization order raising assessed valuations. The order touches all 99 counties and 19 city assessor areas with largest increases in agriculture at 37.45 percent, residential 18.2 percent, and commercial 4.5 percent. Hearings run through Oct. 17 with final orders by Oct. 20, and owners may protest to local boards between Nov. 1 and Nov. 15 after publication of the final adjustment in local papers.
