Hultman Rules Interim Committee Powers Unconstitutional
Iowa Attorney General Evan L. Hultman said a law granting the Legislative Interim Committee authority over salaries paid by the Board of Control is unconstitutional and questioned the legality of many committee powers. He will issue a formal opinion stating the $12 000 salary ceiling is void, potentially ending the dispute over psychiatrists earning over $18 000 annually and other budget powers. The opinion, He said, would define powers that the state constitution limits to investigating departments and making recommendations to the next Legislature.

The Women of the Moose donated proceeds from an ice cream social and provided entertainment and a dinner.

The Defense Department ordered 73 000 reservists to active duty starting Oct 15 amid the Berlin crisis. Two Men Killed In Oskaloosa Boiler Blast
Two Curran Engineering Co. workers Lee Smith aged 36 and Lewis Kiefer 24 were killed when a boiler installation exploded at Continental Overall Co in Oskaloosa. Another Continental employee Homer Tarr was injured with fair condition. The blast occurred during a gas conversion and damaged only the basement boiler room with no external damage.
