The Upper Iowa Methodist conference votes to move its annual meeting from fall to June for five years, after a Friday afternoon test. Dr. J. P. Van Horn of St Luke's Hospital Cedar Rapids reports the hospital is debt free and the mortgage burned.
Sigourney man Joe Smith was found dead in a Brookfield Missouri tourist camp cabin with his wife Mrs Smith in critical condition. Authorities received word from Missouri officials via Keokuk county Sheriff Earl Tremmell that a jet in the cabin was open. The couple had left Sigourney for a vacation last Saturday. he was about 40, a former city man and World War II veteran with semi professional baseball ties in southeastern Iowa.
Boone county officers investigated a vandalism attack on the Iowa Electric Light and Power highline. Insulators were shot at across seven towns, leaving areas without power until repair crews restored service. Shells were found in tests indicating two guns were fired at the insulators.
Waterloo Register Co plant employees walked out on Friday seeking higher pay amid a wartime production push. The firm’s attorney said a contract with the Steel Workers Organizing Committee had expired but he found no evidence the strike was union authorized.
A coroner's jury ruled the shotgun used to kill 84 year old Henry Madsen was allegedly in the hands of Ruth Madsen his wife. A warrant for her arrest was issued and she has been missing since the body was found. The jury called for her detention and noted she may be demented. Sheriff W W Christian of Cedar county holds the warrant.
Maj. Gen. Roscoe B. Woodruff, Fort Jackson divisional commander, visited Oskaloosa to address selectees bound for training and their families. He stated that a soldier is made by training and discipline.
In KUIBYSHEVV on September 19 UP dispatch reports Wendell Willkie drawing a rare spontaneous demonstration at the Bolshoi theater. He appeared during a ballet performance and, after presenting autumn flowers to dancers and kissing a ballerina, received three minutes of standing applause. Russian officials noted the ovation as unprecedented since before 1917.
Reports from France say Berlin began massive deportations of French citizens to eastern mines in reprisal for anti Nazi activity. No numbers were given as crowds were sent toward Polish and Salician mines. Pierre Laval met with his council for two hours amid deliberations of tremendous importance.
Des Moines yesterday reported navy enlistments naming Homer Lee Moriarty and Lewis Edward Wiley of Washington as joining the service.

The Washington County Rural Letter Carriers association met at United Presbyterian church Crawfordsville Friday evening with about forty members from Brighton Columbus Junction Crawfordsville Kalona Riverside Washington and Wayland. Mayor Davidson gave the welcome and Prody Borkoski of Brighton spoke in reply. Refreshments were provided by Crawfordsville post office staff. The group voted to buy two war savings bonds and to donate 2.50 to the U S O and 2.50 to navy relief. Next meeting set for Kalona on May 7 1948.

Carl R. Oldfield of Lime Creek was re elected chair man of the Washington county AAA committee for a third year at the county convention held this morning. Warren O. Morgan re elected vice chairman and other officers named. a secretary and treasurer to be elected this afternoon.
Des Moines, Sept 19. G W Martin was robbed of 467 dollars on a crowded downtown sidewalk in front of a bank. Two men jostled him as he exited with a deposit. one escaped with the billfold while Martin held the other suspect, Sammy Sanders of Minneapolis, until police arrived.
The American Legion opened its three day Streamlined national convention in Kansas City with 1,500 delegates and about 5,000 members attending. National Commander Lynn A. Stambaugh, from Fargo, N D, presided as the group focused on war priorities and business rather than past pageantry.
Notice of dismissal filed in J. D. Shea v Standard Oil of Indiana. Defendant counter-claims $419.06. plaintiff seeks $545. Case involves accident at the Pearl McNeill filling station Crawfordsville on January 15 1941 when Shea’s car struck pumps on ice.

Officials plan to start the primer coat of oil on Washington streets next Monday in the surfacing program. A car of primer coat oil was expected today and a top coat oil car mid next week, weather could delay. Top surfacing will be covered with rock chips or pea gravel.
Joseph John Stolze, an experienced instructor, is hired by airport manager Ralph Scott to lead a new pilot training class beginning next Monday. A second instructor arrives early the week, joining Freeman McCoy, Svend Kjar and Ray Sutter. Eleven students traveled to Des Moines yesterday to enlist in the air corps reserve, bringing the class to 26 with all members in army reserve or navy air corps.
At the county treasurer s office officials report automobiles licensed in the county total 5 400, down from 5 842 a year ago. Government restrictions on new car sales and owners storing cars for service members explain the decline. Trucks remain near last year s figures while used car transfers have fallen to about half.
