Ben Abben Jr., 23, of Blairsburg, suffered critical injuries when his car collided with a gravel truck driven by Gerald Ratcliff near Blairsburg. Sheriff Lear said tall corn at the intersection hampered vision of the motorists.
Iowa City. State’s evidence in cases against 17 Johnson County tavern owners raided July 19 will be presented to the grand jury this week. County Attorney Harold W. Westermark said the action will determine if the cases go to district court jury.
District Judge H. C. Taylor granted a temporary injunction on an injunction petition by County Attorney E. J. Grier to close the Venice Inn tavern run by Mike Sklavos. The order bars Sklavos from selling liquor, targeting the operator rather than the property.
Senator Styles Bridges of New Hampshire called at a Republican meeting in Council Bluffs for sweeping Communists and their fellow travelers from Washington's councils and the federal bureaucracy. He warned against sympathetic understanding of Stalin and his American cohorts by New Dealers.
Council Bluffs reports the first arrest under Iowa’s anti cigaret bootlegging law. Gene Ross, 33, an iron worker, was fined 10 dollars by Municipal Judge Daniel H. Sheehan for possession of a carton of cigarets but the fine was suspended. Ross said he bought the carton from a man on the street.
Des Moines firms Standard Factories Inc and Des Moines Rubber Stamp Works were among the low bidders for nickel silver badges. The council rejected all bids and ordered new bids for steel and nickel silver badges after finding steel bids too low and outside specifications.
Four county town churches the Methodist Presbyterian German Lutheran and Catholic join with the American Legion Early Progressive Community club Comis Club for Women and the school faculty to call a mass peace meeting. Attendees will telegraph or write to Iowa congressman Vincent Harrington and Senators Guy M. Gillette and Clyne Merping urging strict neutrality as Congress convenes Thursday.
Des Moines authorities authorize 10 improvement projects in state parks funded by a $175,000 emergency conservation fund. The conservation commission may spend most projects in specific counties including Muscatine Hardin Pottawattamie and others with amounts ranging from thousands of dollars.
City council discussed a new sewer project on the north side of West Madison Street from Sunset Park westward to the Denison Diamond Inn. Estimated cost about 1600 dollars, with work to begin soon, overseen by the sewer committee and Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes.
President Roosevelt plans to appear before a joint session of Congress at two o'clock Thursday afternoon to request revision of the neutrality law. The White House said the hour could shift depending on congressional organization. The message is expected to trigger a historic debate on keeping the U.S. out of war.
Jesse W. Kaye aged 80 died in Long Beach California after a months long illness. He was a longtime Riverside and Washington grocer, father of Mrs Orie Turner of Washington and husband of Phoebe Burrows. Funeral services will be held Friday at Sunnyside cemetery in Long Beach with surviving children and brothers noted.
Soviet spokesmen described a wide invasion of Poland along a large front as a liberation of “brothers” and said about 11 million Ukrainians and White Russians would be under Soviet protection. They argued Poland had virtually ceased to exist after the German invasion, recalling historic borders from post World War I.
Des Moines reports the 1939 Iowa corn husking contest will be held October 31 on a 40 acre field at John Kenks farm three miles northeast of Fairfield. The field was chosen from three fields grown this year for contest purposes.

Trial of jury cases began in district court with Lizzie Farrell as claimant against A. K B. Sands administrator of Rebekah Goble's estate seeking 1420 dollars. Jury selection completed by 3 30. Ms Farrell testified followed by Mr Farrell. Jurors named include John Hough Mada Dickinson Lewis Smith and others.
A car borrowed from a Washington high school parking area was damaged in a collision near Kaat Becondetree and North Fourth Avenue. Drivers John Richards and Glenn Hamilton were involved, with Wayne Durst as passenger. Hamilton was behind the wheel. Alfred Brown drove the other vehicle. Damage estimated at about $500. No injuries. The car was returned to the high school and the youths reported the incident to City Hall. disposition pending.
Mrs Harold Pearson of Ainsworth dies after a brief illness. The body was taken to Sherman Funeral Home. Definite funeral arrangements and a fuller obituary will be announced tomorrow.
