Sheriff Putnam notes the start of chicken thefts as autumn arrives with several birds missing from a farmer’s roost southwest of town last Saturday. He urges farmers to watch flocks closely and mark chickens for identification to deter theft and aid recovery.
Boy Scout Troop 33 meets tonight at 7 in the Methodist church for an evening gathering and the Scout achievement race begins, with all Scouts urged to attend.
Two unidentified airplanes dropped bombs on Cristiateh killing six people and firing houses. Another unknown plane killed three at Cotringen destroying homes. Both towns lie near the Romanian Polish frontier.
Frank Miller of the city park board announced that the basin from the old central fountain was reinstalled in Sunset Park on the new north section facing West Main Street. Next spring a spray arrangement will convert it into a fountain with overflow to the rock yard.
Dr. R C Keagy of Aberdeen South Dakota named pastor for the Washington church and will move tomorrow with his family into the parsonage on West Washington. His wife is Iowa born and active in church work. The Keagys and Arthur Atack family will relocate to Aberdeen and join the same church, with Keagy bringing decades of service in YMCA youth work and American Legion roles.
Sheriff Putnam said Charles Adier of Fairfield and Vernon Shepherd of Council Bluffs likely will plead guilty to malicious damage to buildings in Jefferson County Court at Fairfield. They face up to five years in state prison. a trial could reveal thefts of copper cable in Jefferson and other counties. They admitted shipping lightning rod cable and stripping tires from a car near Washington.
Two men were bruised and shaken after a Sunday morning automobile wreck at the junction of No 1 and the Richmond road north of Washington. Driver Dan Miller of Wellman and passenger Olin Wade of Wellman were in a car that skidded off the road into a ditch after failing to negotiate a corner. Estimated damage to the vehicle was about $100.
Sheriff Pu nam cites a wreck near Grandview weeks earlier where suspects possessed a siphon like the Uione used to drain fuel from cars. Evidence ties stolen copper to Washington county buildings and school houses. Arrests occurred Monday night in a Washington street by Officer Walt Kiersey. Copper was recovered and traced to Davenport and Washington.
Cedar Rapids contractor Smith Construction Company begins site preparation for the Troop F 114th Cavalry armory at the west edge of town near the junction of primary roads 121 and 92. The contract, awarded last week, names Smith of Cedar Rapids as work supervisor while disputes arose over bidder identity and headquarters in Iowa City.
Berlin reports resumed Warsaw battles as German and Soviet forces push toward a swift partition of Poland. British and Moscow outline a six point plan for redraw, with a buffer state discussed to separate frontiers. Courageous sunk by a submarine. survivors rescued as ships and destroyers respond.
The Washington independent school district reports 1241 total enrollment this year across Lincoln Kindergarten through high school and junior college. Lincoln Kindergarten 277, Stewart Kindergarten 271, Junior high 171, Washington High 443, Junior College 74. The kindergarten and first eight grades reached 719 pupils this year.
Mrs Mary Genkinger and Mrs Ty F Barker returned from a four week western trip. Genkinger visited her daughter Mrs L D Edwards and Mr Edwards in Jerome Idaho. Barker visited her son Charles and family in Pullman Washington. This morning 20 to 30 men greeted her at the project seeking employment.
Washington dispatch reports Alt M. Landon and Col. Frank Knox Republican nominees for 1946 will join in Roosevelt pre congress talks on neutrality as Congress prepares for a special session. Roosevelt telephoned Landon and Knox to invite their attendance. Also noted is bipartisan aim to suspend partisan politics during wartime decisions. Charles Hale of East Pleasant Plain was in town.
