Pretoria reports the South African Republic replies to the British colonies secretary’s Sept dispatch. It rejects a five year franchise and Uitlander representation, says proposals aimed at peace were offered in good faith, and that a joint commission remains desirable to explain seven years’ law.
A disputed proposal asks why the government did not offer a five year franchise and quarter representation for new populations before the volksraad. It defends arbitration under the 1884 London convention and rejects unconditional acceptance of such terms. The dispatch urges Britain to stick to joint inquiry proposals.
Grand jury in Springfield Illinois indicts Penwell Overholt and others from Penwell Springside and Pana Coal companies for inciting riot on April 10. The Pana mines face possible winter shutdown as miners return amid union pressure and officials' protests. Local business leaders oppose mine closures while planning resumption by October 1.
Changes in the Cantacuzene Grant nuptials place the Greek ceremony before the Episcopal service. The Greek rite must occur privately on Sunday evening September 24 due to church law, with the Russian ceremony postponed to comply with Greek church requirements for the marriage.
Nellie Chance daughter of Captain Matthew H. Chance made the richest strike by a woman in the Klondike at a Yukon gold camp. Representatives of the Indiana Southern railroad completed deals to secure a valuable right of way through Terre Haute center to Union station. Vice President Walsh arrived from Chicago and the matter was closed for immediate construction.
Des Moines reports five Iowa counties held conventions on Saturday. Cherokee County delivered a surprise by giving Cummins supporters control of most wards in Cherokee City and nominating C. F. Coburn for representative, with the convention instructing him to vote for Gear.
A quarrel at 262 North Clark Street in a saloon ended with one man fatally stabbed and three others seriously injured. The victim was identified as Martin Walgran who was rushed to Alexian Brothers' hospital. injured bystanders include Fred Fisher Theodore Walgraf and George Clark.
Surgeon General reports high mortality in bubonic plague areas with 1,820 deaths among 1,482 cases in Hong Kong and 1,866 deaths among 2,486 cases in Tamsui, Japan.
Sunland Belle driven by Harry Devereaux set a pacing record at the Gentlemen's Driving club matinee in Cleveland, finishing the mile in 2:07 with the last quarter in 31 seconds, beating her own 2:08% mark.
In Carterville Illinois on September 18 a white versus black miners clash left four black miners dead and one mortally wounded with two more injured. The violence followed black miners entering the town and clashing with white miners at the Illinois Central station. After the fighting, several houses were burned and arrests made in Marion as authorities sought to restore order with the militia arriving from nearby towns. The governor ordered additional forces to Carterville to enforce the law and pursue the guilty.
Charles W. Pardridge and Charles Netcher, owners of the Boston store at 118 to 124 State Street, dissolved their partnership on Saturday. Pardridge will retire and Netcher will operate the Boston store.
Governor Tanner orders two companies of the Fourth regiment under Colonel Bennett to Carterville after seven miners were killed and others wounded in a mob attack. He vows speedy justice, urges Williamson County authorities to restore peace, and offers state aid, including the National Guard, to arrest and convict those responsible.
Colonel William J. Bryan led a wide audience at Central Music Hall in denouncing monopolies as pernicious and urging state and federal anti trust laws or a constitutional amendment. He argued rising dollars fuel trusts while Cochran defended price cutting and urged restraint. The gathering adjourned without resolutions. Antitrust group National Inscope formed with M. L. Lockwood elected president and regional vice presidents to be chosen.
Madison Wis Sept 15 E M Palmer of Verona wealthy farmer accuses a confidence man of hypnotizing him in Chicago and getting him to sign a $500 check. The check mailed to First National Bank of Madison was returned unpaid. Palmer met a supposed comrade at a G A R reunion in Philadelphia and a young man claimed to be son of Madison banker N B Vanslyke.
Davenport Iowa September 18 Governor Leslie M Shaw will visit Davenport October 2 to reply to Fred Ki White’s Friday opening speech from Turner hall. He will address the Democratic attack and speak on the same platform as White. Chicago September 16 The Democratic national committee sub committees conference at the Auditorium will draw a large delegation from bimetallic organizations nationwide.
Frank Russell general manager of Park Falls Pulp and Paper was seriously attacked in Butternut with his right ear torn off. Investigating officers are pursuing two suspects and expect capture.
In London, Paul Steins presents an invention to restore sight to the blind by substituting the eye lens with electricity. He asserts the device can also enable the deaf to hear by stimulating the body to send voice vibrations to the brain.
London reports Lady Curzon’s first viceregal season in Simla is the most brilliant on record. A series of fortnightly dances at the vice regal lodge, state events, and garden parties drew social attention. Lady Curzon is popular for her regal yet approachable manner and dazzling evening dress. The Knights of the Black Heart and Celestials hosted dances attended by Lady Curzon and her sisters, highlighting a vibrant colonial social scene.
Centerville Louisiana reports another fiery letter episode in the Wales Wakefield feud. The Wales home near Plino burned while the family was away, with authorities urged to end the feud amid public indignation. Separately in New Orleans General Gordon discusses rebuilding plans with the United Confederate Veterans after a home fire.
