Lebanese army commander Fuad Chehab ordered house arrest for three to five high ranking officers. Reasons remain unknown with speculation they plotted against the incoming regime or faced reprimand for crushing rebels. The political climate surrounds Dr. Charles Malik’s UN General Assembly election and rising opposition.
The Evangelical and Reformed Church council voted unanimously to back a merger of the World Council of Churches and the International Mission Councils. The World Council has 170 member churches in 52 countries. the Mission Councils include Christian Councils in 38 countries. Council members approved sending two gifts of 1000 dollars each to flood victims in Pakistan and South Korea via Church World Service.
Detroit saw 17 new polio cases and Wayne County 30 as the epidemic surged. Health officials praised a mass inoculation program by the Wayne County Medical Society, while Detroit’s total rose to 356 since Jan 1 and county totals to 470. An infantile paralysis death increased the year’s toll to 11.
Woody Richards of the Washington city police will become deputy sheriff in Washington County replacing Loren Robertson in Sheriff Charles Snyder's office. The change takes effect October 1.
Fifty Presbyterian ministers and elders demand an apology from Gov. Faubus after he accused their group of being brainwashed by leftists and integrationists. They debated mediation by Billy Graham and urged countermanding the school closure proclamation while election changes unfolded. Faubus did not say whether he would apologize.
Seven youths were charged with breaking and entering after admitting to 20 burglaries in the Waterloo Cedar Falls area. Arraigned in municipal court they face District Court with bonds set at 2000 each. Defendants include John Lewis Irving Lawson Terry Blanford Richard Miller Kenneth Gillespie James Curtis and Dennis Kenney.
Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield said a law creating a five cent postage due penalty may take effect Oct. 31. If the recipient refuses to pay, the letter returns to the sender for payment, then goes to the dead letter office. Local merchants in Cincinnati criticized the rule as unfair to innocent parties.
A Wal lace s Farmer and Iowa Homemstead poll of several hundred farmers shows preventing war as the top issue with 57 percent first place votes. Strong national defense and corruption in government tied for second at 12 percent, while raising farm income earned 10 percent and improving schools eight percent. Segregation received no votes. Democrats favored farm income gains, with 59 percent. Republicans 38 percent on preventing war. Bible study class at United Presbyterian Church canceled for the week due to the pastor’s absence, Dr Evert L Haney.
Cub Scout Pack 243 will meet Thursday September 18 at 7 30 p m at the V F W Hall. Highlights include a graduation ceremony and the introduction of Tom Hackney the new district Scout executive from Iowa City to assist with plans for a bigger and better new charter year in Washington. All Cub Scouts and their parents are urged to attend.
Republican gubernatorial candidate William Murray accused Gov. Herschel C. Loveless of exploiting care for the aged to aid re election. He criticized Loveless for pension proposals and past school aid tax relief promises.
The Washington County Beef Producers will tour feeder cattle markets in Missouri. They will visit the Memphis sale and the Kansas City livestock exchange, departing Sunday afternoon September 28 and returning Monday night. A $12 deposit secures reservations at the Washington Extension office or with listed directors.
Gov. Herschel C Loveless denounces William Murray tax plans as a scheme to benefit well to do taxpayers. He argues a 1 increase in the sales tax would cost Kos suth County residents more than school aid gained and warns against opening border counties to shoppers crossing into Minnesota Nebraska and Wisconsin.
The Agriculture Department estimates January through September 1958 farm income at about 13 billion dollars at an annual rate, up from roughly 10.9 billion in the same period in 1957. Prices had risen early in year but drifted lower by mid August, with a corresponding dip in parity levels.
Ottumwa truck driver Loral Laverne Hudson was killed when her truck burst into flames after leaving the Wayland Washington road three miles south of Washington. She swerved into a ditch to avoid two cars blocking the road while traveling north. Loss estimated at $2,000.

The 42 year old Indianapolis 500 veteran described his racing career from midget and sprint cars to top finishes, stressing discipline, farming to stay fit, and a modest outlook despite near 500 mile endurance.
Des Moines authorities continue an intense probe into the slaying of Rose Grandanette 33 wife of a local grocer with a .380 automatic. Investigators report conflicting accounts of the crime from witnesses and a possible robbery angle is being deemphasized. Grandanette was struck near her Windsor Heights home after a confrontation with three men who fled in a light tan car. She died next day. her husband Bernard along with family and police pursue leads as detectives note blood on fixtures and a dent in a drain pipe suggesting two shots.
N. H. Rough, formerly of Duncan Oklahoma, took over duties as manager of the Montgomery Ward store in Washington Tuesday. He is seeking a residence for his wife and two sons Frankie and Johnnie as they plan to join him once housing is found. The new manager is a golfer and hunter with nine years at Montgomery Ward and prior service in Kansas City and two Texas cities.
Ted Johnson will become district manager for Iowa Southern Utilities in Washington at the start of next year, replacing H. E. Turner who retires January 1 1959. Johnson was recently promoted to assistant district manager. The company also creates the Northeast Division covering 49 communities and over 12 000 customers with electric and gas service. J C Green to lead the new division starting October 1.
United Auto Workers leader Walter Reuther says talks near a settlement as Ford workers walk out nationwide after the 10 a.m. deadline. Major issue remains plantwide seniority despite a company offer retroactive to July 1 and higher pensions.
William Day, formerly of Washington and now a district ASC administrator for 12 Iowa counties, spoke on federal farm programs and agency functions. He said the programs aim to promote farming as a nationwide beneficial industry. Howard Witting ASC manager in Washington County attended, along with a visiting Boone office manager. Don Boyer presided as plans were made to sponsor a pinochle tournament and Dale Carnegie leadership training.
Regular practice for the YMCA swimming team starts Monday Sept 22 in the Y pool. Four divisions listed Midgets Preps Juniors and Intermediates with times 4 5 and 6 p.m. About 40 boys signed up as more are sought including more in the midget group and seniors for life saving class.
Iowa forecast shows mostly cloudy tonight with a low of 45 to 55 and a warmer northwestern area. Thursday brings more clouds and highs in the 70s, followed by showers Friday and cooler conditions. Five day temperatures average near or above normal with normal highs 73 to 77 and lows 49 to 53. Precipitation from Sunday to Monday expected moderate to heavy with rainfall amounts around one inch.
