Gemini 11 ends its three day space mission with successful splashdown

Gemini 11 astronauts Charles Conrad and Richard Gordon landed 9:59 a.m. EDT 702 miles east of Cape Kennedy near the carrier Guam after an automatic reentry. They completed a record altitude and spacewalk feats, tied to a first rendezvous with an Agena satellite, and returned to an Atlantic recovery with 12 aircraft in attendance.

Marines Hit Beach South of Viet Nam Border in Deckhouse IV

A force of up to 15,000 Marines launched an amphibious and helicopter assault south of the DMZ aiming to cut the 324B North Vietnamese division. The operation followed a high casualty report as U S forces noted 5 000 American deaths in the war and ongoing air strikes near Hanoi and the DMZ.

One Known Survivor of German U-Boat Sinking

A German U-boat Hai with 21 aboard sank in a North Sea storm near the Shetland Islands. Chief Petty Officer Hans Silbernagel survived after being in the water for over 12 hours. Rescue efforts were hampered by high winds. 19 crew were lost.

School Board Implements Salary Adjustments And Staffing

Washington Community School board heard principal reports on opening day and approved salary changes for teachers under the schedule. New hires include bus drivers Earl Cline Norma Cole and Jane Lambertson and part time secretary Judy Seifert. Remuneration for teachers with extra assignments was approved, and Title 1 staff were added with Marguerite Pefferman teaching remedial reading. Several aides and associates were named. Early dismissal November 3 for a professional day was set. Sept 19 reorganizational meeting was scheduled. Transportation director Glenn Williams reported, and an attorney advised against using the 2 percent mill levy for football field improvements without voter approval. Supt. Court rules in suit on tuition

A three judge federal panel urged the University of Iowa to reconsider classifying George Clarke as a non resident for tuition. The court upheld residence rules as constitutional but found the review committee's application unduly rigid and retained jurisdiction to allow re evaluation. Clarke a native of Elmwood Park Illinois plans to practice in Ottumwa after graduation begging potential loss to Iowa universities.

Mansfield moves to end filibuster on open housing bill

Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield decided to file a new cloture petition to halt debate on the open housing civil rights bill. A second gag rule vote is set for Monday, with Mansfield conceding that the measure will likely fail again, though he hopes for more votes despite doubting a two thirds majority.

Keota Woman Burns In Advance Ross Plant Blast

A Keota woman, Mrs Floyd Brown, is in intensive burn care after a bake oven in the winding section of the Advance Ross Co plant exploded yesterday afternoon. She suffered burns to the arms back and torso and is being treated at University Hospitals after initial care at Washington County Hospital. The blast triggered flames and two sprinkler units with workers using CO extinguishers. Work in the winding operation was suspended for the day.

Johnson to resume his speaking trips

President Johnson plans to resume speaking tours around the country next week. White House details are scarce but reports indicate visits to Atlantic City New Jersey St Louis and Kansas City invited by a labor group. A tentative trip on Friday September 23 would end at his Texas ranch.

Washington truck driver escapes injury in Keota railroad crash

Myron Burroughs of Washington narrowly avoided harm when his gravel truck collided with a Rock Island switch engine at the Keota crossing around 9:15 a.m. The truck swung onto the tracks to avoid the engine, upsetting onto the rails and striking the caboose, which derailed. Burroughs emerged unharmed after hauling gravel for a resurfacing project.
