Carry Blaskey, 4, son of City Clerk Virgil Blaskey, was seriously injured when struck by a car allegedly driven by Craig Pewit of Mount Sterling. Two wheels passed over him before he was taken to an Ottumwa hospital.
Northern Natural Gas Company pipeline employees, pulled off their jobs after union men from Stony City protested non-union labor, returned to work as of now. No settlement terms were announced.
A temporary truce halted a strike threat at the Waterloo sewage disposal plant project worth a million dollars. The agreement followed two meetings between groups representing the Waterloo Building Trades council and the Building Trades Employers Association. Hoist engineers had refused to accept materials delivered by non union truck drivers.
DECORAH The five Winneshiek county supervisors send letters to Gov. George A. Wilson protesting a pardon for Marvin T. Grattan, Civil War veteran whose eight year sentence for killing Claude Mead was recently lifted.
Ottumwa moves toward an aeronautics ground school under the National Youth Administration. A hangar and airport unit remodeling would accompany the program. If approved by President Roosevelt the government would fund labor and supervision while Ottumwa pays for materials. Estimated annual cost about $13,000.
Des Moines reports Iowa expands civilian pilot training under the Civil Aeronautics Authority. Eight colleges will participate including Simpson College in Indianola Morningside College in Sioux City and Parsons College in Fairfield.
Supt. E. A. Ralston announced public schools will dismiss at noon today due to extreme heat. School work will resume Monday morning, with hope for cooler weather.
The Methodist Men's Club sponsors a church farewell for Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Atack. It invites all church members and families to attend in the social hall at 7 30 Monday evening September 18 with refreshments provided by the Men’s club.
State beauty shop inspector Mrs. Charlotte Smith visited Washington and completed inspections of ten salons. Three shops earned stamps of approval for sanitation and compliance with all state requirements, to be displayed with their certificates.
President Roosevelt announced the special congressional session will focus on revising neutrality laws to drop the mandatory embargo on arms to belligerents. He said he does not expect new legislation to curb wartime profiteers and defined territorial waters by national interests. He noted the definition applies only to salt water.
Announcement of a radio broadcast on all networks Saturday from 9 30 to 10 Eastern time under the auspices of the Democratic party women’s organization. It notes it is the first nationwide women’s network program. President Roosevelt will not appear, but Mrs Roosevelt will deliver the closing address after the planned program.
Washington county planning board will meet in the G A R room at the courthouse Saturday at about one o clock under the direction of County Agent J W Chandler. The meeting will likely select a development focus for farming and may reorganize with an additional session planned for late September. Ed Hotle will lead, with Forrest Bennett speaking, and invited members span several townships and county offices. A district meeting plan includes 15 to 20 Farm Bureau members traveling to Mt Pleasant next Tuesday for the annual fall session with leaders and committee members in attendance.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam discussed during an interview that the Washington county jail is overcrowded and undersized, housing as many as 16 inmates in a space meant for half that number. He attributed growth to automobiles, faster communication, more drunken driving incidents, bad checks, and broader moral laxness since the 1880s, alongside outdated facilities lacking separation rooms and adequate lighting.
Polish reports from Zaleszzyki say Polish forces aided by heavy artillery defend Lwow as German motorized columns reach outskirts but retreat after Polish resistance. German troops push toward Brest-Litovsk while the Poles maintain control of the great citadel. Berlin reports German north attacks toward Praga and Warsaw, with a Polish counterattack repelled west of Warsaw.
Crawfordsville sheriff investigated the burglary of Shaffer Bros hardware store and found a stolen truck abandoned about four miles south of the Johnson County line on road 218. The thieves entered through a rear tin shop window, drilled the lock, and took pocket knives, pennies, a Winchester single shot rifle, flashlights, and other small items. The truck, fully equipped for repairs, was recovered near Iowa City later the same morning.
Kansas City reports the death of H. L. McElroy longtime city manager aged and longtime No. 2 in the Tom Pendergast democratic political machine He served 13 years in the role and was a key aide to the machine’s leadership.
The Lemberg radio quoted by the Polish Transcontinental Press said 20,000 civilians were killed in German air raids, with civilian casualties exceeding military deaths, as of September 15.
Paris reports say French forces pushed deeper into German territory east of the Saar river and encountered heavy artillery fire while advancing from Saarbrucken toward the Bliss river. Local operations began overnight and continued today with positions opposite Saargemund.
