Iowa hunters will enjoy the first open pheasant season since 1935 as the conservation commission allows hunting in designated areas from November 12 to 14. Shooting is permitted daily from noon to 5 PM under state law.
Elmer R. Galdner, 41, a ten year veteran teller at First Trust and Savings Bank of Davenport, pleaded guilty in district court to embezzlement and received a five year sentence at Ft. Madison state penitentiary by Judge W. W. Scott.
Jean Mc Kellum a 24 year old waitress of Waterloo was found guilty in municipal court of violating the state civil rights law for refusing to serve a Negro. She was fined ten dollars and costs but the fine and costs were suspended by Judge Ben G Howery.
Mount Pleasant President Harry P. D. Henry announced the election of three new faculty members for the opening college year. They are Prof. Sidney E. Tilden in economics and sociology, Dorothy Mathews in piano and organ, and Waldo E. Braden in speech and dramatics.
Police probe links ambush shooting of Johnnie Critelli 27 to last June tavern fire. Critelli wounded in front of his home at 3 30 am by shotgun blasts from behind grape arbor 50 feet away. his wife 26 narrowly escaped injury returning from a wedding anniversary celebration.
Iowa Falls voters approved issuing 85 000 dollars in bonds for a new grade and high school building including gym and auditorium. The project costs 170 000 dollars with federal aid covering the rest. The measure passed 1 049 to 527 as supporters celebrated with a band playing in the streets.
Boone C W Kammelier executive secretary of the Iowa Tuberculosis association announced Iowa's Christmas seal goal for this year at 106000 dollars. The target is 8000 dollars higher than last year and represents a per capita contribution of 4.2 cents. Funds support county associations as well as the state organization.
Ottumwa police identification bureau chief Carl M. Higdon was reelected president of the Iowa State Policemen's Association for the seventh year. Other officers retained include J. J. McDermont of Davenport as first vice president L. L. Eklund of Des Moines as second vice president and Leo Allstott of Mason City as third vice president. The 1939 convention will be in Mason City.
Gerald Sperry from Ft. Dodge Iowa becomes Plant supervisor at the Washington Dairy after graduating in June from the state college at Anes. He lives at 403 East Washington Street and is an expert golfer invited to the Iowa state Master Golf Tournament but unable to attend.
John R. Cobb of London drives a Railton beetle shaped car to 350.20 mph on the Bonneville salt flats, beating Captain George Eyston’s prior mark. Cobb’s two runs reached 352.29 and 347.60 mph, with Eyston planning a challenge at dawn. The British design features two Napier Aero engines, no radiator, and a detachable body.
The Journal offers free monoplane gliders and Dick Dar ing illustrated trick books with Quaker Oats trademarks as part of an advertising campaign. Boys and girls are invited to visit the office to claim their free items while supplies last.

John H. Gillespie of the Iowa state commerce commission announced the hearing on the discontinuance of the M and St I railroad Oskaloosa to Keithsburg line has been moved to October 4 from September 20 in Oskaloosa. Trains will run until the hearing, set for ten o clock, as the company seeks more time. The line covers about 100 miles through Washington county between Richland and Winfield.
The Farm Bureau Service station in Creenfield Iowa burned today destroying tires and batteries with an estimated loss of 5006 dollars.
Three gunmen fled into Missouri after raiding an oil station near Landis Station in Des Moines. They obtained $100 and a quantity of cigarettes before escaping in a badly battered car, state investigators reported.

Fire swept through Milo Iowa destroying two brick store buildings a grocery and drug store along with their contents. Damage was estimated at about 10000 dollars. The blaze occurred in the early morning hours and caused significant losses to the stock and buildings.
Led by Secretary C. L. Schmitt and the Washington Chamber of Commerce road committee, locals gathered at Columbus Junction to mark the completion of paving on road No. 2 in Louisa County. Hundreds from traversed counties were expected for a day of events and a dinner.
