Des Moines organist Bessie Black Young will teach organ at Simpson conservatory, announced by Dean Herbert A. Harvey. She succeeds Wanda Schwartz who resigned from University Church of Christ in Des Moines.
Charles Maruth, assistant registrar at the University of Iowa, estimates near 1500 new students this year. Indications show several hundred more than last year. freshmen must arrive Monday for the first event of Freshman week and register September 22. Upperclassmen will register over the next two days.
Eugene Foreward a Dubuque real estate man and prominent Republican will umpire the Dubuque county Young Democratic club annual picnic game between young and older Democrats. Police protection will be provided to cover disputed calls.
In Des Moines the liquor commission issued a bulletin to store managers and staff urging reading the Iowa liquor control act and refreshing memory. The bulletin notes the law forbids political activity by liquor commission employees and states policy changes will be issued in writing.
Bernadine May Ld the Des Moines Ice and Fuel Co. driver Richard W. Razor 20 said the year old student rode south beside the truck and suddenly crossed in front of it causing a crash. He swerved to avoid her but she was critically injured.
Monsignor Luigi Ligutti of Granger Iowa was elevated to domestic prelate by Pope Pius XI. Three bishops five monsignors and over 100 priests attended the investiture ceremony at Assumption church to honor his work with workers and the poor.
A new Dick Tracy mystery thriller begins its fifteen installments at the Fox Theater with a special 1 buffalo nickel admission for under 13 and a two-for-one adult offer using today’s Journal coupon. Also showing is the Fast Company murder mystery on Wednesday and Thursday.
Merlin Morehead started this week as meat department manager at the National Tea Market. He moves from Maquoketa where he has lived 25 years. Mrs. Morehead will arrive from Maquoketa next week. Both are Methodist church members. He says his only hobby is baseball.
International News Service reports Georgia voters focus on re nomination bid of Senator Walter F George amid Roosevelt opposition. Results from yesterday show statewide activity with Louisiana and Arizona races also noted.
Milo T. Sorden was unanimously re elected as director of the Washington Municipal Band for 1939 after a season closing meeting. Max Lee was elected band president John Younsling vice president Lester Muck treasurer and Jimmy Birney secretary. The board includes Jess W. Radda Milo W. Steele Jr Dary Fetters Tom Gray and Paul Campbell. Members praised progress, new music purchases, and winter rehearsal pay plan while noting cooperation with neighboring bands and future state fair hopes.

Maryland voters renominated conservative Senator Millard E. Tydings over David J. Lewis in a decisive win that robs the New Deal of a key ally in the state. Roosevelt campaigned for Lewis, who pitched liberal policies, but Tydings prevailed backed by state organization and funds. The outcome signals growing anti New Deal sentiment within the party and foreshadows further demonstrations in Georgia and elsewhere.
Des Moines reports J H Milroy, Iowa Republican central committee chair, previewing a streamlined 1938 GOP state program before the Iowa Women's Republican club. He rejects bombast, pledges truth and hard facts, and urges scrutiny of candidates described as unusually high type and deserving voter judgment.
Weather bureau forecast more rain for eastern Iowa as the Mississippi inches toward flood stage. Across the state streams swollen from heavy rainfall caused localized floods with totals including 4.12 inches at Pocahontas, 3.59 at Davenport, 3.51 at Rockwell City and two inches at Atlantic. Temperatures remained two to ten degrees above normal amid recent wind lightning and rain damage.
The Washington county post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars announces a public writing contest about the first Armistice Day on November 11, 1918. Prizes are offered. twelve best stories will be published in the Journal before Armistice Day. Entries must be handed to judges by October 15.
Willis Jones informed that he passed the state board examinations for embalming licenses taken after completing the Hohenseheh Carpenter mortuary course in St. Louis. He may serve a year under an apprentice license before full credentials. He assisted at L. A. Jones funeral home with his father.
Rome reports Italy would march to Germanys aid if Britain or France violate the German frontier in aiding Czechoslovakia. An authoritative source says only total territorial annexation of the Sudeten provinces by Germany will bring Europe safely through the emergency. Paris notes a plot by Sudeten Germans to seize the Sudeten area and declare anschluss leading to martial law in Czechoslovakia.
Judge Frank Bechly announced the September term jurors will report on Wednesday September 21 at ten o clock. A probate matter involving Kenneth Blecha and a probate case on Emma Smiths estate precede the first jury trial. Dorothy Ayers is granted a divorce from Maynard Ayers. Several defendants and appearances noted. grand jury challenges waived by eleven men. Judge Bechly will resume work in Washington next Monday.
Forrest McAvoy, four years as manager of Washington Ice, transferred to Fairfield to join People's Ice Co. Floyd Kerr becomes Fairfield branch manager. The McAvoys move to 221 North Second Avenue. Kerr family also relocates. Both Fairfield and Washington units are branches of Ottumwa Ice Co.
In Prague and London the crisis erupts as Sudeten Germans clash with Czechoslovak authorities. Police are driven to their station amid heavy gunfire. Czech troops deploy tanks and seize control as casualties mount on both sides.

Ottumwa Iowa Sept 14 An off duty station attendant Leslie Davis was shot in the hand after grabbing for a gun held by a bandit who robbed him of 12 dollars The robber escaped and Davis was listed with a minor wound.
Sheriff J E Davidson and Deputy Paul Hodgson stopped a jail break when they grew suspicious of three prisoners. Officers searched the cells and uncovered crude keys saws knives and billy clubs.
