Paris authorities plan foot and mounted troops and municipal police to safeguard next week’s American Legion convention. Prof H C Moeller of Iowa State Teachers College begins a four day session of educational work for rural teachers. Classes run half a day in eight county schools this week while nearby schools dismiss to allow attendance. Demonstrations use students as examples, with mornings at Highland No 2 and afternoons at English River Middlebury, Cedar township Lexington, Lime Creek Jay sonville, Dutch Creek New Haven, Pleasant Valley Clay, Center Jackson, and Redrick Washington.
The 225 West Main Street suites once used by Dr A J Broz are undergoing general remodeling and redecorating this week. The Marsh Bailey estate owns the property and will shortly offer occupancy for residential apartments. Harry Shrader holds the rebuilding contract and crews are on site.
A high school assembly at 1 15 p m introduced the Hi Y and Girl Reserves causes to new students and launched a campaign for membership. Maurice Meyer and Harry Kreider spoke for Hi Y while Winifred Allen and Edna Mercer represented the Girl Reserves.

San Francisco dispatch reports a cyclone near Mazatlan, Mexico, damaging property and causing great loss of life. Panama liner Panama carried 70 passengers and rode out four days of storm before returning to find widespread suffering and unknown death toll.
William B. Brock and Edward F. Schlee reached Kasumigaura after a 650 mile flight from Omura amid Typhoon Kyushu damage. They plan a Pacific crossing via Midway, hoping to depart Friday. reports say Kyushu toll includes hundreds dead and thousands homeless.
A fifteen-car booster caravan left Washington heading west at 10 15 am bound for Greenfield Iowa to drum up support for Primary No 2 extension of the Short Line across the continent. Motors from Muscatine Columbus Junction and Washington joined by local Drum and Bugle Corps in greeting officials at city hall. The highway commission backs the project as southern towns promote the plan to place Washington Muscatine and Council Bluffs on the map.
Supt J H Peet reports total enrollment 1151 for twelve regular trades with 560 boys and 611 girls in the system. Junior high shows 25 more boys than girls in grades 6 7 and 8 while high school lists girls ahead by 59. Grade totals in several schools yield mixed gender splits with overall counts nearing 148 in grade schools and 249 in junior high.
A report from Washington Junior High shows a near full return of prior students with only three not advancing from last year. The enrollment rose to 249 from 215 a year earlier, driven by new local families and country students seeking manual training and sewing programs. Grade breakdown lists 87 in sixth, 84 in seventh, and 78 in eighth.

State bank examiners assumed charge of First State bank in Riverside after its closure yesterday. The failure leaves Riverside without a functioning bank and notes indicate weakened assets. The bank had merged with two others about a year ago, marking the third state loan institution to fail in Washington county within three years.

He recently underwent an operation several months ago and is kept quiet with no visitors this week to limit inquiries.
