Increase in U S corn crop estimates in 1972
The U S Agriculture Department raised the August to September 1 1972 corn crop estimate to 5 124 billion bushels, a 4 percent rise, while the 1972 wheat crop was pegged at 1 559 billion bushels. Both crops were below 1971 levels as production controls reduced output due to prior surplus harvests and low farm prices. The corn crop fell 8 percent from the previous year’s record of 5 540 billion bushels.
