Rob Elder, an eighth grade student, carried a baby raccoon with a broken leg to Washington Junior High. Science teacher Mike Zahhs treated the limb, splinted it, and a nurse later checked the animal, which showed signs of recovery despite a few snarls from the creature in a cage.
The number of candidates seeking two expiring six year seats on the Washington County Hospital Board of Trustees rose to six with filing through Wednesday. Latest filers include Mrs Wayne Stransky of Wellman and Mrs Keith Shaffer of Washington joining incumbents Richard Ross and Mrs Hazel Sitler of Washington and Dick Knupp and Frank Patterson of rural Washington in the race for two six year terms in the fall general election.
Immunizations against several childhood diseases will be given next Tuesday in the fourth of six clinics by the County Medical Society and the County Public Health Nursing Service. The sessions run 1 to 2 p.m. at Wesley House in Washington and are open to children aged 2 months to 6 years.

Washington hospital board heard the doctor shortage stems from no clinic space. The search committee, led by Robert Riley and Dr. John Helscher, says a centralized clinic near the county hospital is essential. Trustees consider leasing land and public financing options while soliciting public ideas. Nursing pay and staff retention also prompted a committee review and another aide training class.
The board approved extra instrumental instruction for elementary band, raised salaries for several teachers after training, and named Gary Collins girls summer softball coach. Robert Shaw will provide 1.5 days weekly as elementary music instructor. 104 new students joined the program, totaling 185 with sixth grade band.
Rehearsals begun for the musical You're a Good Man Charlie Brown to be staged October 3 4 and 5 at Washington High School as a fundraiser for the new Washington Community Center. Cast includes Mike Kramme Charlie Brown Cathy Lloyd Lucy Tom Foels Linus Judy Eaton Patty Dr Mike Leary Schrader Leon Hillman Snoopy all directed by Dave Elder. Ticket sales start next week run by Y's Men's Club members.
A weather note indicates showers and thunderstorms will move through this afternoon with much cooler conditions and high temperatures in the 50s. Showers continue tonight with lows around 50, then cooler and cloudy with diminishing showers Friday and highs in the upper 50s.
