Rain forced the postponement of the Sunday charity horse show at the Washington County fairgrounds after halter classes were shown. The afternoon events were rescheduled for Sunday September 17 to benefit the Developmental Center for the Handicapped.
Myrtle Genkinger, 70, of route 3 Washington, was hospitalized Sunday after a collision at West Washington and South Avenue. The Genkinger car and Dr. E M Ahart of Washington’s vehicle were wrecked. Ahart was cited for a right of way violation.
State Representative Herbert L. Campbell of Washington is one of three longtime conservationists to receive the Soil Conservation Award from WMT Stations. The Des Moines banquet marks the 26th annual conference for Iowa Soil Conservation District Commissioners. Campbell, raised near Unionville Missouri, farms 1,100 acres with his son and operates a 140 head beef herd. He emphasizes tile outlets terraces strip cropping minimum tillage ponds erosion control windbreaks and wildlife habitat. He has chaired and served on local soil boards and state committees and is an Iowa Master Farmer.
Occasional showers and thunderstorms expected this afternoon tonight and Tuesday. Temperatures will range with highs around 70 to lower 80s and lows in the 60s.

Elmer Krantz of route 2 Ainsworth was the car driver with his wife and Mr and Mrs Clarence Kaufman as passengers. Roger Gene McDowell of route Birmingham drove the Iowa State Highway Commission truck that struck the car from behind causing a fire. Mrs Krantz suffered broken ribs and McDowell faced a charge of failure to stop in the assured clear distance ahead.
In Des Moines candidates for Iowa’s top offices spar over Vietnam policy welfare reform and property tax relief. GOP Sen. Jack Miller and Democrat Dick Clark clash on war endgame and Job Corps costs while Gov. Ray and challenger Paul Franzenburg differ on corporate tax plans bonding for roads and campaign disclosures.
