Union head Albert Shanker holds nearly 40 000 resignations from New York City teachers and staff, nonbinding and not sent to the school board. Teachers boycott classes and picket across about 900 buildings, while the board calls for public support and may face a strike ban under a new state law.
Gov. Harold E. Hughes weighed a special session to clarify the 3 percent sales tax on services. He said not enough cause exists yet and argued against taxing new construction, while the Iowa Tax Commission struggles to interpret the law and draft rules. The measure, expanding the levy from 2 to 3 percent, takes effect Oct. 1.
In daylight Sunday three North Vietnamese regiments totaling about 2900 troops attacked the Marine outpost at Con Thien near the DMZ. The U.S. Marines, greatly outnumbered, repelled the assault. American planes also bombed Cam Pha, Hanoi’s third largest port, for the first time after Washington lifted a ban on strikes there.
Partly cloudy and warmer tonight and Tuesday with a chance of scattered thunder showers. Marines fought and won a major engagement near Con Thien and Cam Lo, suffering heavy losses of 34 killed and 185 wounded, while claiming about 350 Communist deaths. UPI reports Marines withdrew, leaving a burned tank and arms, as jet strikes hit Cam Pha and Hanoi area roles.
Surveyor 5 touched down in the Sea of Tranquility near the southwest edge after a skidding landing. NASA and JPL scientists reported sharp, high quality photos and began soil analysis using a gold plated device and a sensor linked to the craft. They noted a potentially disturbed lunar surface and a spongy texture, with 18 early pictures transmitted and plans for 600 line imagery during analysis. The mission, after overcoming a leaking helium valve threat, puts the United States ahead 3-2 in soft landings.
President Johnson’s daughter Lynda Bird plans a December White House wedding to Marine Capt Charles S. Robb. The couple announced the engagement after a ranch ring event. Robb heads to Vietnam in February, and the ceremony will mimic Luci Johnson’s wedding with close family and friends.
Hurricane Beulah, packing 125 mph winds, battered the Barahona Peninsula and killed 16 in the Dominican Republic. Residents fled to Santo Domingo shelters as Haiti faced violent winds and floods. A Cuba alert followed the storm’s path toward Port au Prince region while Doria and Chloe lingered offshore.
Donald R. Nelson 33 of West Brooklyn was killed in a collision on U S 30 when a car driven by Dixon pulled into the path of a semi truck driven by Robert M. Overturf 29 of Malcom Iowa Overturf was in satisfactory condition at Dixon Public Hospital
Indian and Chinese Communist forces clashed at Nathula Pass high in the Himalayas using artillery mortars and automatic weapons. Both sides reported casualties with Chinese claims of Indian fire causing Chinese losses and damage to civilian houses. The border tension follows prior incursions near the pass and amid wider regional strains involving Sikkim Tibet and Nepal.
National Farmers Organization leaders told about 800 Iowa delegates in Des Moines that a new 28 state milk withholding action is being planned for two to four days. President Oren Lee Staley warned the timing is unsettled while urging continued all commodity withholding until prices improve. He warned of disaster next years if farmers continue selling at current prices and advocated collective bargaining to keep product off the market.
The wife of a Knoxville, Iowa serviceman was notified his husband, due home from Vietnam in a month, was killed Friday in a helicopter crash. Army Pfc. Francis Glazebrook Jr., a gunner, had served 11 months in Vietnam. A 1964 Bussey High School graduate, he survived by his wife Eunice of Knoxville, an infant daughter, and his parents, Mr and Mrs Francis Glazebrook Sr. Des Moines.
