Washington high school coaches and players fine tune for the season opener at Os kaloosa with expectations of a close contest. Waggoner may return after injury and Moon Richardson misses time with a foot injury while McFarland recovers from a cut arm.
Dr Walter Williams, president of the University of Missouri in Columbia, has been awarded the Oberlander grant for foreign travel and study for the second time.
F E Smith and daughter Mrs Florence Garner and four Washington children were in a collision with a car driven by Donald Teets of Wellman about 8 30 yesterday evening two and a half miles south of Wellman None of the Washington party was badly hurt but the youngest child had a bad head cut and the oldest girl, Mrs Garner and Mr Smith suffered bruises and minor lacerations Their Buick went into a ten foot ditch and they received first aid at the Wishard home before returning home in Washington

Chief C C Reister of the Washington fire department said an investigation has started to determine the origin of a Saturday evening fire that badly damaged the Robert Kephart residence at 1021 East Second street. The family appears to have not been home. the house was saved but sustained interior damage from fire smoke and water. Part of the contents were saved and moved to A F Kephart’s home next door. damage reportedly insured.
Mrs Charles Brown and family traveled to Omaha for the funeral of Mrs Nyberg the aunt of Mrs Brown born in Seattle Washington. The Nybergs were en route to a family reunion in Iowa City when illness struck in Cheyenne Wyoming and she died there. Miss Una Ayers Mrs Brown sister had been visiting and left Iowa City by plane Friday night upon learning of the illness but did not reach Cheyenne before the death.

Funeral services were held in Elim Grove cemetery for William Samson age 23, grandson of O. L. Samson of Washington. He died from injuries sustained in an automobile crash in Burlington. The burial followed a Burlington funeral and a Washington arrival after the death notice appeared in the Journal Saturday.
The Oskaloosa band will perform at 7 46 p m Wednesday evening Sept 14 in Central Park in exchange for a Washington Concert band visit. The program includes marches overtures songs operatic selections and a piccolo solo with pieces from Rio Rita and A Hunt in the Black Forest.
Harold Wehr son of Matt Wehr was struck by a car driven by a young man named Weir from Grandview. He ran in front of the car unexpectedly and escaped with minor bruises and lacerations. Miss Virginia Wright who fell was badly bruised but much better.
Mrs. Mary Motts died Sunday at four o'clock at the home of her daughter Mrs Helen Stephens in Indianapolis after dropey illness. She previously lived in Washington and will be buried at Elm Grove Cemetery with funeral arrangements pending. Survived by son Mr Black and several daughters including Mrs Nora Hasley Mrs Helen Stephens and others in Chicago Elmwood and California. A longtime A M E Church member in Washington she had lived away in recent years.
A very large crowd converged in Central Park and nearby streets Saturday evening to learn who would receive the Ford car donated by Washington businessmen. Crowds filled sidewalks and entered local shops, with soda fountain spaces especially crowded.

DES MOINES Sept. 11 UP Charged with solving the low liquor control problem if the 18th amendment is repealed the Herring commission of nine men will convene for its first meeting here Tuesday. The commission was appointed Saturday to study liquor control and draft recommendations for the November special session. It will organize tomorrow by selecting a chairman and likely a secretary from outside the group. The panel aims to have a report ready by October 15 for legislators to review before the session. Eight gunmen robbed an American Radiways Express convoy at St Paul Union Station. They fired in the air and fled in a sedan carrying cash and securities worth about $166000, with at least $40000 in cash remaining negotiable. Two guards and a messenger were held during the heist.
