Violent Storms Spark Flood Fears Across Iowa
A strong high pressure system kept Iowa cool as violent weather struck many areas. Five inches of rain near Villisca threatened small streams feeding the Thompson, Grand and Chariton rivers, with warnings of possible floods though main streams were not expected to flood. Creston and Clarinda reported two and three inches of rain, US 71 briefly closed north of Villisca, Creston saw high winds snapping lines, a Burlington tunnel rescue saved teenagers atop a car, a Creston creek overflowed but homes remained safe, funnel clouds were sighted near Reinbeck and Tama County but did not touch ground.
