A cargo of instruments from a high altitude balloon landed three miles south of Charles, Minnesota after an 84 mile flight from the Twin Cities. General Mills reports the instruments appeared undamaged. The mission studied cosmic rays using a lead shielded gamma ray telescope. The balloon reached 105000 feet and was released from New Brighton. Civil Air Patrol logged over 1.5 million miles in search and rescue missions last year.

Floyd J. Robertson a 24 year old cement plant carpenter admitted kidnapping and killing 18 year old Marjorie Schneider, a stenographer, from a lovers lane near Fort Collins Colorado. He led authorities to her nearly nude body buried in a rocky slope above Highway 14 with three gunshot wounds. The crime occurred Sunday and a preliminary autopsy confirmed the bullets were the cause of death with evidence of prior sexual conduct.
