The St James parish hosts an open house at St James school on Wednesday September 10 at 7:30 p.m. for parents and students in grades 7 through 12. Registration and fee payment for the religious education program are on site. The first Parish Religious Education Program class for grades 9 through 12 begins September 17.
Iowa farmers eligible with 250 bushels or more will decide on continuing the half cent per bushel checkoff for soybean promotion by the American Soybean Association. Last year Iowa contributed about $700,000, over two thirds of ASA revenue. Minnesota and Illinois also provided large sums. Town Secretary Robert Lounsberry will announce unofficial results Tuesday night.
Weather outlook shows partly cloudy conditions through Tuesday with a slight risk of thundershowers Tuesday afternoon. Lows tonight mid to upper 50s and highs Tuesday near 80. Light southeast winds tonight. Rain chances around 20 percent on Tuesday.
Mrs. Margaret Wolf was installed as Christian Education Counselor of the United Presbyterian Church during worship. She succeeds Rev. D. Nichol who moved to Minnesota. Wolf, longtime Washington County resident, brings church school planning and education experience, and will oversee church school, United Presbyterian Women, music programs, youth activities, and teacher training.
Boston and Louisville opened desegregation school sessions amid protests and arrests. In Louisville guards rode buses while civil rights officials observed, noting mostly small white turnout but rising black attendance. Boston saw 62 arrests as 62 demonstrators, plus others, faced charges amid tense safety zones.
Four pork production demonstrations will highlight the Pork Production Clinic at the Third National Commercial Swine Type Conference led by Eldon J. Haas. Demonstrations cover parasite control, low identification, unidentified growth factors in feeds, and nitrates free hot dogs. The event runs September 19–20 at the Washington County Fairgrounds with exhibits, a speaker program, and a livestock sale.
A devastating weekend quake in eastern Turkey killed at least 1,700 people, with Lice bearing the brunt as rescue workers comb through rubble. Thousands are homeless as Diyarbakir province suffers widespread damage and the death toll is expected to rise toward 3,000. Army helicopters and soldiers aid the search amid searing scenes of collapse and loss.
Walter Wellington a 33 year old Mount Pleasant auto parts dealer was found dead behind a bank after a blast in an alley. Authorities with the BCI FBI and state offices sought clues while indicating few details about the explosion or any car theft probe connected to Wellington. The blast damaged ten windows and a bank air system and was heard four blocks away with Wellington’s body autopsied in Iowa City.
House Speaker Carl Albert predicted the Senate would uphold President Ford's veto of a six month extension of domestic oil price controls. Ford met with lawmakers and Republican Senate members to discuss energy policy and a possible compromise.
About 1,200 to 2,000 motorcyclists protested the new helmet and eyewear law in Des Moines. The rally started at Valley High School, moved to Capitol Hill, and drew riders from clubs, gangs, and independents. Capt. Jack Beardsley noted the crowd grew from 500 to over a thousand. speaker Skip Taylor of El Foresteros was present after last week’s arrest.
A major back-to-work trend emerged in southern West Virginia coalfields with limited picketing. Ronald Lester of Beckley said the return was nearly full, though pockets of resistance appeared in Clothier, Ferrell, and McDowell County mines. No major disturbances were reported overnight.
In Washington County the Highland district fields two director seats with Lyle Fox vs Janice J. Schnoebelen for a three year term and John E. Spenner against Roger Schloss for district contest. Other districts show unopposed incumbents as polling opens noon to 9 pm with Brighton municipal question to extend council terms.
