Alfred A. Romer, 34, was sentenced to three to five years in prison in Detroit after his inability to control his thirst led to trouble.
NATO met in secret as Turkey pledged to prevent a repeat of anti Greek riots that threatened alliance cohesion. Greek officials sought NATO safeguards for about 50 officers and families at Izmir, while Athens pressed for Cyprus self determination.
In Charlotte a Negro couple, Marshall Caldwell and wife, found four of their children ages 9, 3, 4 and 1 inside a brass bound trunk in their home bedroom. Police say the lid latched accidentally while the children played. No charges yet. Joyce Ann and Marsha Elizabeth lay on the living room couch. all four died on arrival at a hospital.
Washington Jaycees join 56 countries in Operation Brotherhood to aid 750000 Vietnam refugees. The US joint drive with International Rescue Committee seeks transport housing feeding and hospital care for refugees fleeing north to free Vietnam. Local president Leon Hillman says substantial contributions have been sent and asks individuals or groups to contact by phone or mail if they wish to help.
Two Ohio men pleaded guilty to robbing a Mount Pleasant filling station of 65 dollars on August 19 and were sentenced to 25 years each. District Judge E F Newell ordered Charles Simmons, 21, Bellefontaine, Ohio, to Anamosa Men's Reformatory and Jim Patterson, 23, Lakeview, Ohio, to Fort Madison penitentiary on robbery with aggravation charges.
The Iowa Highway Commission reports 1954 saw higher accident and fatality rates on secondary rural roads than primary highways. Secondary roads had 5 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles and one accident per 246 thousand miles driven, compared with one per 620 thousand on primary roads.
Three federal mediators met with United Auto Workers officials and Maytag Co. in Newton Iowa but did not reach a settlement. mediator Robert E Hall said no date was set for another meeting. The strike began August 31 over demands for guaranteed annual wage and a union shop clause.
Babe Ruth, famed for 60 home runs, also captured the American League pitching title in 1915 with Boston, posting an 18-6 record.
Emma M. Shebeck 78 of 411 East Van Buren died suddenly at home from a heart attack. Funeral set for 2 pm Saturday September 10 at Jones Funeral Home with Dr Walter Scheuermann presiding. Burial in Riverside cemetery. Survivors include daughter Mrs Frank Krotz, son Melvin, brother Will Prebyl, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
National Guard pilots at Holman Field in St Paul are warned to use caution when flying over the White Bear and Afton areas where mink farms are located. The note adds a grim line about the mink potentially becoming a wife's coat, reflecting wartime humor or caution.
The Camp Fire office in the city hall building will be open from 9 to 11 30 am each Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday. Officials announce the schedule will remain in effect until further notice.
A 48 year old hitchhiker, George Tiemen of Keota, was beaten with a tire iron by two men in a black car near Montezuma, Iowa. He was found in good condition at Grinnell hospital. Poweshiek County sheriff sought the attackers after Tiemen reported they stopped on a country road and assaulted him before he fled to a farm house for help.
Adenauer travels to Moscow to meet with Soviet leaders. The visit aims at easing tensions and exploring postwar relations between Germany and the USSR.
Public school teachers and administrators from all county schools attend the Washington County Institute at Washington High School on Monday. The program features Dr Evert L Haney and Dr Ralph Ojemann with discussions led by area education leaders and local officials. Classes in all county schools will be dismissed to allow attendance.
New York Harbor idle as 2,000 ILA stevedores threaten to defy a court order. Justice Di Falco issues a restraining order, backing 170 shipping firms seeking damages. Governors Harriman and Meyner refuse to intervene as docks show minimal activity.
West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer arrived in Moscow for five days of talks with Soviet leaders aimed at German unity and the release of 200000 German slave laborers. He met Premier Bulganin and Foreign Minister Molotov and pledged to seek world peace.
Word arrives of the death of Mrs. W. B. Ingham formerly Mary Welsh of Conway Texas. She had been in ill health for years and critically ill for the past week. Survived by her husband a son of Las Vegas New Mexico and three brothers W B Welsh Panhandle Texas H H Welsh Mariana Florida and Charles Welsh Washington.
Gra Y and Junior Hi Y groups resume next week under YMCA guidance with Dick Thompson directing boys' programs. Gra Y at Lincoln meets after school on Tuesdays, Gra Y at Stewart on Fridays, and Junior Hi Y meets Wednesdays at 8 a.m. in the junior high building.
St James Catholic parish plans a Sunday pledge collection on Sept 1 to support a 130000 school fund campaign. A kickoff dinner in the parish hall featured Rev M J Dingman of the Davenport diocese urging workers to vision and generosity. The drive runs 2 to 5 pm on Sept 11 with teams visiting members to secure pledges.
United Press reports two northeast Iowa farming families were hurt by animals. Bob Olive, 62, and his son Bill, 23, were gored by a bull on a farm near Winthrop Bath with the elder in critical condition. Wilbur Peters, 30, and his young son were knocked down after a cow charged while they moved the calf into the yard near Sumner.

Friday will be partly cloudy and slightly warmer with a low around 52 to 57 in the northeast and 58 to 63 in the southwest and highs near 80 in the northeast and around 60 in the southwest. Saturday remains partly cloudy with little temperature change.
