The War Department recommends returning the state owned portion of Camp Dodge to Iowa. Formal transfer has stalled since July 1 awaiting lease modifications with the federal government.
A $6,000 blaze wiped out the Coralville sawmill owned by Virgil Bowers. The fire consumed a tractor stationary power unit main saw furnace and $200 in wiring along with a large stock of lumber.
District Judge Tom Boynton granted a change of venue for Everett Tristine a farmer near Tripoli charged with murder in the death of his wife s daughter JoAnn Pipho four. The case is moved to the Charles City Floyd county division of the district court with no trial date set.
Maytag president Fred Mays arriving from Washington says WPB will allow unrestricted civilian production after Germany defeat, a step but not enough to curb unemployment during reconversion. Maytag, a 3000‑employee firm, previously made washing machines and urges immediate material allocation and pilot operations on civilian items without harming war output.
United Press reports Tokyo broadcasts say up to forty American B 29s attacked southern Manchuria targeting Antung and Anshan iron and steel centers. Broadcasts note formations of tens to dozens of aircraft with no claims of downed planes, while Japanese interceptors reportedly engaged the raids over Antung and Anshan.
Susan Evaline Rice Donaldson born 1879 near Washington died at county hospital after long illness. Survived by husband Bert Donaldson eight children, including Forrest, J Melville, Harry, Warren, Lloyd in army, Leanna Cross, Lorena Anderson. Funeral 2:30 Sunday at L. A. Jones with Rev. George Kerr. Burial Elm Grove cemetery. Pauline died in infancy.
Elwood Mesecter of Chicago and Josephine Bailey of Washington secured a marriage license. The filing records show their intent to wed and the formal approval by the county clerk.
Supt. M. M. Sehell reports first week enrollment at 946, slight elementary gains offset by a drop in high school, with Stewart and Lincoln total 389 in two elementaries. Junior high has 136. high school breakdown shows freshman 112, sophomores 88, juniors 92, seniors 86. lunch program planned to start in October. improvements planned at athletic field and elementary schools. high school lacks a principal and math teacher but replacements hoped soon.
Central Park hosts a Saturday concert at 8 p m featuring marches God Bless America Valiant Youth March His Honor March and Colonel Bogey among others. Soloist performances and a clarinet duet highlight the program ending the 1944 summer season.
Allied forces and Tito's partisans reportedly landed in western Yugoslavia joining Soviet actions as the Balkan war expanded. Moscow claimed Red Army breakthroughs across Bulgaria toward the Greco Turkish border while Berlin said Soviet columns crossed into Bulgaria. The Danube frontier and southern Romania saw region-wide moves with fears of encirclement of German forces in southeastern Europe.
Mrs. Grace P. Waller resigns as superintendent of Washington County Hospital after about a year in charge. She will move to Boulder Colorado to join Dr. C. T. Nuttall. County hospital board chairman C F Letts says no successor chosen yet and several applications are being considered.

Kathryn Latta a long time Washington teacher probated in the courthouse this morning left $1000 to the Washington Y W C A with a governing committee to administer. A similar $1000 to the Y W CA of Washington with a like administration. Another $1000 to the Presbyterian church of Washington Iowa held in trust for three years for church work and minister salary from income. Also $150 to the church organist for hymnals and music and $300 to a committee for Washington High School library books. Remainder goes to relatives named in the will dated July 11.
By morning 316 men and women in the armed forces have applied for ballots for the November 7 election. Ballots will be printed by September 13 and mailed as issued. Most forms came via the secretary of state and auditor. over 40 arrived yesterday. Relatives have sent additional forms to be filled and returned.
Secretary O E Sehmitt of the Washington Chamber of Commerce will lead the judging team for the Journal Washington county tall corn contest to be held at 10 AM tomorrow. Mayor R L Lytle is expected to judge. Entries must be in by ten o clock. Prizes include a 25 war bond for first, 10 in war stamps for second, and 5 in war stamps for third. Don and Jesse Radda waive first and second if they win, pushing awards to third through fifth.
The report records a low of 48 degrees and a high of 78 for the previous day with a five degree rise from the night before. It also notes attorney Edmund D. Morrigan Jr now serving as a navy officer is named as executor.
Preliminary work for the Legion drive in Washington set tags on homes, with 1,000 printed and 500 more secured for today. Residents asked to tie old paper with ten feet of binder twine and place it on front porches for pickup Monday evening around six or seven, in nine districts citywide.
Washington county young people prepare for an autumn gathering September 26 in Sunset Park directed by the County Council of Religious Education and the Hawkeye club. Mary Lou Stacy leads arrangements with Rev H L Metzker Don Howard assisting. invitations will be sent to county youths.
SUPREME HEADQUARTERS reports General Patton's third army closes near Metz and Nancy in the Moselle valley within 20 miles of Germany as four allied armies push toward the Reich border. Allied air forces target Ludwigshafen Kastel and Gustavsburg, crippling German war plant output ahead of a wider offensive.
Theodore Roosevelt Tucker of Winterset Iowa served in a Seabee battalion and was killed in action against Japan in the southwest Pacific. He enlisted in 1943 and died after overseas duty began last April. He was 34, born July 6 1910 in Columbus Junction. He leaves wife Eurain Earls and two daughters Phyllis and Janet, plus his mother and siblings.
Lt. James C. Olinger of Ainsworth died August 16 from wounds received August 13 in action in France. Ainsworth's first war loss, he was about 24, a 1939 Ainsworth High School graduate, Troop D alumnus, trained at Fort Riley, and serving as a replacement officer overseas. He is survived by his parents six sisters and brother George, also in the army after service in the Aleutians.
