In Waterloo Iowa the intercollegiate dairy cattle judging contest begins the 33rd Dairy Cattle Congress with 1262 animals entered across open and 4-H divisions. Holsteins lead with 332 entries, followed by Ayrshires 206 and Jerseys 183 as other breeds compete in open and 4-H heifer club sections. зер
Arnold and Dee visit Washington Iowa to highlight war bond sales. Anyone pledging 375 for a 500 bond or 500 bond today or tomorrow earns a dinner ticket with the stars at the YMCA at 5 30 in September. Pledges can be made at banks the State theater or Journal office with limited seating and a large fundraising push underway.
SIOUX CITY State Senator Robert P. Munger tendered his resignation to Gov. George A. Wilson to enter the army air forces. Newly commissioned, he has left for an officer training school at Miami Beach Florida. Republican and Democratic county central committees will meet to choose candidates for his unexpired term ending December 31 1944. Munger is an attorney and a Republican.
NORTHWOOD police detained former town marshal W. H. Bassett after a Saturday night "wild west demonstration" at the Friendly tavern. He fired four shots wounding two lights and causing customers to flee in haste. Bassett, who served as town marshal for six years, was jailed Sunday night on the accusation.
Des Moines area reports fireman preacher Rev. Howard L. Stanbrough ignored Fire Chief Charles L. Slade's order and preached at Douglas Avenue Church of Christ. He argued officials tolerate other law violations while demanding he quit preaching and keep his job.
Washington will host Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock a county meeting of the salvage department led by Earle Libe, chairman of the county salvage collection. Twenty southeast Iowa counties will attend at the YMCA. Herbert Plagman, state director, arranged the meeting by telephone. An assistant supervisor from Washington, D. C., will explain the salvage program’s urgency. The event is open to the public and all committee members are urged to attend.
President Roosevelt asks Congress and the American people to accept drastic war sacrifices to fund and accelerate victory. He plans a special anti inflation message and a 9 30 P M Eastern time fireside chat to explain costs and objectives.
Glenn Hochstetler of Kalona was arrested Saturday night and is in county jail awaiting a hearing. He is charged with assault and battery in what is alleged to be an assault on his wife.
Wendell L. Willkie left Cairo for Turkey today after touring the Egyptian front and meeting Allied leaders. From Turkey he will proceed to Moscow, asserting that the German advance has been checked on this front and that recent actions may mark a turning point in the war.
Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Butterbaugh returned yesterday to their home in Stuart. He came here Saturday while Mrs. Butterbaugh had been with her sister Stella Palmer for several weeks.
Report notes volunteers devote their entire time to helping sell war bonds, highlighting community effort and wartime fundraising. Public notices emphasize patriotism and unity in support of national financing.
Tonight’s civilian defense and patriotic program at Case field was abandoned because of weather. Robert Schell and Ivan Norton announced the cancellation and said they hope to reschedule for Armistice Day observances on November 11. Clarence Logan was named city commander for Washington with Mrs. Vernon Witting as vice commander based on their defense school backgrounds.
Funeral services for Martin Workman Welch of Crawfordsville were held Sunday afternoon at the Crawfordsville Methodist Church with Rev. Lester Bill officiating. Pallbearers included George Yeager Harry White Clint Fletcher Will Lease Dick Lease and Dr N J Lease. Burial followed in Crawfordsville Cemetery.
Funeral services for Ernest William Nelson 71 will be held Tuesday at Sherman's funeral home at two oclock. Burial follows in Elm Grove cemetery. Nelson died Sunday at his nephew Howard Berns home after a stroke. He was a lifelong farmer and elder in the United Presbyterian church, survived by brother Frank Nelson of Victoria Canada and devoted to Norman and Marlene Benn.
Dr. Stanley B. Niles praised 15 students of the pilot training course at Washington junior college and airport as they finish ground school and receive small silver wings marking completion of the primary phase of Army Air Corps training. About 38 hundred spectators attended the ceremony with wings awarded by President R. A. Stewart.
Funeral services for Harry H. Knott, Spanish-American war veteran, were held at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. Van Ryan presiding. William Schoenig of Muscatine, grand commander of the Spanish-American War Veterans, led graveside rites at Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers were six Spanish-American War soldiers led by Sidney Smith. fellow veterans Milton Frank Carl Tieske Asa Wagner and Walter Phelps also attended from Muscatine and were comrades from Company C Fiftieth Iowa Infantry.
Rainfall after yesterday afternoon and last night totaled 0.20 inches, per the official weather observer. Sunday’s high reached 75 degrees and the low fell to 62 degrees.
Forrest Schwengels presided as coordinator for pilot training in Washington. The Washington high school band under Maurice Brayton performed several numbers. Rev. George Kerr offered prayer as the audience recited the oath of allegiance to the flag.
Heavy bombers escorted by fighters struck Duisberg and other Ruhr towns in a large night raid. Coastal and bomber commands supported the operation as Allied air power pressed the campaign. German towns reported damage and eight planes were missing from the raid. In Egypt, British forces pressed Rommel's retreat with mobile units harassing his rear guard.
Orpha May Thornburg 72 died at county hospital after years of ill health. Funeral held Tuesday at Sherman's funeral home with Dr. F W Eastwood. burial in Richland Odd Fellows cemetery. Born Sept 1 1870 near Bloomington Illinois, married Henry Thornburg in 1891. Lived in Denver Richland Sigourney and finally Washington. Survived by daughters Helen Heilman and Vaughn Thornburg plus two grandchildren. one son deceased.
