Holiday death toll hits 522 in Labor Day traffic

United Press International reports 522 accidental deaths since Friday 6 p.m. EDT, led by 425 traffic fatalities with Texas at 34 and California 29. The worst crash occurred near Madison Wisconsin killing six on first Sunday morning, with five lives each at Kerrville Texas Raymondville Texas and Tell City Indiana.

India Attacks Pakistan Lahore Front In Three-Pronged Drive

Betsy Hammers Bahamas as Florida braces for hurricane

Betsy lashed the Bahamas with 125 mph winds and 450 mile wide reach forcing coast warnings from Cape Kennedy to Key West. Gales hit Abaco and Eleuthera as islands prepared for a destructive pass near the northeast Providence Channel.

Richland rites for Everette Jones 1884 80

Funeral services for Everette Jones of Richland will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Gould Funeral Home Richland with Rev. A. R. McMurrin officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Jones died Saturday in Mercy Hospital Des Moines from injuries from a two car collision west of Indianola Friday night. He was born Oct 5 1884 near Richland son of Miles and Lucy Baker Jones and spent his life in Richland. a retired farmer. He married Olga Morgan Oct 9 1904. she died Dec 13 1998. Survivors include a daughter Mrs George Olive of Oskaloosa five grandchildren 14 great grandchildren one brother Raymond L of Brighton two sisters Mrs Fred Leppert of Richland and Mrs Otto Wilson of Mt. Pleasant.

Marines Hit Viet Cong Positions Near Quinhon

American Marines with air and artillery support killed at least 25 Viet Cong guerrillas in a search and destroy mission six miles south of Quin Hon. Marines were airlifted and amphibious tractors ferried them in with light casualties reported. The battle followed air strikes against targets in North Vietnam and a Skyraider shootdown.

Guardsmen serve on Auxiliary Patrol over Labor Day weekend

Four sergeants from the Washington National Guard Verle Mitchell Glen Murphy Jim Dempsey and Richard Holmes patrol Washington County highways as Auxiliary Patrol members. They join Guardsmen from across Iowa in two jeeps on a 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. shift from Friday through the Labor Day weekend to bolster highway enforcement.

Sky Ride collapses at Nebraska State Fair tragedy

At the Nebraska State Fair in Lincoln a Sky Ride gondola ride collapsed after two supporting towers toppled. Two people were killed and forty nine injured as gondolas plunged to the ground. Operators and officials faced questions as the ride was dismantled for the remainder of the fair.

More rain ahead for state today

Showers and thunderstorms moved into Iowa's extreme west Sunday and spread to central areas at night. A stationary cool high pressure system and disturbances caused cloudiness with periods of rain across the state, lingering tonight through Tuesday. Tuesday night brings more showers, with the east likely to see Wednesday disturbance activity and cooler western sections ahead of a clearing.

Schweitzer Laid To Rest In Jungle Grave In Gabon

Albert Schweitzer died after a long illness at age 90 and was buried beside his wife in a simple jungle grave near the mission he helped found. President Johnson and world leaders sent condolences as tributes arrived from Europe and Africa.
